I arrived at Anjon’s with low expectations not because of a review but because; 1) It's Italian food in Scarborough, ME, 2) it's the weekend before Christmas, not to mention, I generally approach a restaurant I have never been to with apprehension. The sign on the building says “ Fine Italian Cuisine; Choice Steaks & Fresh Maine Seafood.” This gave me the expectation of a “jack of all trades” type restaurant. The menu is extensive and has something for everyone. Our part only ordered Italian entrees.
The entry area was small but clean and brightly lit. My party of 6 arrived at 6PM on Saturday and waited about 5 minutes to be seated. We did not have a reservation. Once seated, it was 5 minutes until our server passed by and said he’d be right with us and It took 5 more minutes for him to actually arrive. We’re off to a bumpy start in our 15 minutes! Then our server, Christian arrived. He was efficient, personable, and overall, excellent. What impressed me most was his knowledge of the menu providing recommendations & giving his opinion.
The basket of bread for the table was fresh, tasty and plentiful.
Appetizers we ordered:
**Shrimp cocktail (priced at $4 per Shrimp) were enormous, fresh and flavorful.
**Garden Salad was fresh and sizable
**Cups of clam chowder & lobster stew. The lobster stew was unique offering consisting of a broth base and massive chunks of lobster. Incredible ! ( next trip, I’ll order a bowl).
**Anjon’s Alfredo: Fettuccini Alfredo w/ huge chunks of chicken and shredded prosciutto. The chicken was very moist and the prosciutto added nice flavor & texture.
**Cannelloni: The red sauce was incredibly tasty, seasoned well yet mild. The meatballs were large & delicious.
**Seared Scallops & Tomato Vodka Sauce: feedback was the entrée was delicious.
**Veal Parm: A good sized piece of high quality veal—not tough or chewy and lightly breaded. Again, the red sauce was excellent
**Anjon’s Scampi: Similar to Frutti-di-Mare found in many Italian restaurants. I requested lite garlic which they did well--just a hint of garlic to complement the butter sauce and seafood—lobster, shrimp, scallops & clams. The 2 shrimp were the same jumbo size used in the shrimp cocktail. The bed of linguini was cooked perfect. While the dish was sizable, at $30, there should have been more lobster or at least more scallops and clams.
Cannoli: Not just any cannoli, but a "Made to order" crisp shell that was overstuffed, oozing with cold, smooth, creamy sweet cheese filling. Amazing !
Crème Brulèe: Very tasty and an above average portion
Compared to other better Italian restaurants, prices ranged from higher to very high for some dishes. However, the seafood and other ingredients were fresh and prepared very well and service was above average. No one in our party ordered non-Italian dishes such as seafood platters, lobster or steaks, I would probably go to a different restaurant for those.
