“Loved the View”

Ledges By the Bay

Apr 25, 2008

My husband and I stayed there twice. Once in March and once in April 2008. In March the room we had seemed worn ( tears in chair padding) but clean. Hotel manager was friendly and helpful. The view was wonderful. In April we had a better room and again great view. The problem was a room invested with ticks. I was picking ticks off the walls, rug, bedding and off of us. Too bad because we would have gone back. The grounds looked nice. We will not stay here again.

We were surprised to hear that this guest was unhappy with their stay with us. We certainly strive to maintain clean rooms at all times and if there was a problem we only ask that the guest inform us and we will gladly do what we can to make the situation right.... Because our property is located directly on a hill with large sloping lawns toward the ocean, it is possible to have problems with the natural habitat at times... Unfortunately, this has been a very wet Spring here in Maine and the ticks have been prevalent... (In fact, local veterinarians have warned that this is a very bad Spring for pets because of the tick problem.) Obviously, problems can arise from time to time and we would have gladly moved this customer to another room had we known there was a problem. We certainly apologize and would ask that the person who wrote this review to please contact us at their earliest convenience.

“Absolutely Beautiful”

Ledges By the Bay

We stayed at the motel for easter weekend. We couldn't have picked a better location to spend our holiday! Everything was perfect from the fire place in our room, to the ocean view outside our window. Not to mention the staff was super friendly! I would highly reccommend this lovely motel to anyone!

What a pleasant surprise the Ledges By The Bay turned out to be. My husband and I booked a room at a really low rate and figured we what would get what we paid for. We hesitated booking, but the girl on the phone assured us that we would be happy and that their web page was a true representation of their motel.
The motel office is an extension of the owners house. We find this to be typical of small family owned motels. A warm and inviting atmosphere. Having never visited the area we had many questions about where to eat and what to do in the winter. She offered suggestions, gave us maps of the local area and a list of what was playing at the movie theater, in case of snow.
Our room was very nice. We had a room with a king size bed. The room was large with a nice little table situated by a set of sliding glass doors to our own balcony. Our room was equipped with a TV, refrigerator, iron/ironing board, and a hair dryer, internet access although I did not bring my computer this trip its good to know. We didn't even have to ask for extra pillows or a blanket. They were already in our room, along with extra towels. The bathroom was large and there was an extra vanity in the room so my husband wasn't waiting for me. There was a warm and inviting feel to the room all colors!! No white linens!!! We felt sure the view would be only from a great distance. We were wrong. We stood on the balcony our first night watching the water, the view was breathtaking, a bit cold but worth it.
we will come back in the warmer months to see the trees with leaves…..

Our vacation started out perfectly fine. We spoke to a woman who said she is the front desk manager of the motel, and informed her of our arrival in Maine. We let her know that we would be getting to the motel shortly, and reconfirmed that our accommodations as we requested were in order. That all went smoothly and there was no problem at check-in either.
The lobby was quite cluttered and very out of date. The decor was assorted mismatched furniture and worn out area rugs. The "front desk" was a nub of a counter and was barely large enough to serve its purpose. At least the room was half-way decent for the price and location. When we entered our motel room, it was a half-way decent size and equipped for convenience. There was a mini fridge, micro (which we actually got the next day), table and chairs, and separate wall units for the heat and air conditioner. The bathroom was narrow, yet accommodating. There is a sliding glass door leading to a balcony with chairs so you can sit outside when the weather is nice. So much for the room, now for the bad part.
We stayed at this property for a while and got to explore the area and surrounding cities a bit. There weren't many touristic events going on around town but there were some good restaurants and it was still nice to experience the natural beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. Unforturnately, this did not last for long. As we got familiar with the front desk manager, her outrageous character revealed itself. It was toward the end of our stay when things occurred and we really had a bad taste left in our mouths. Apparently this woman has never been anywhere by her own admission. She also seems to have decided to be close-minded toward people who have perceivably more interesting lives than she does. The front desk manager was rude, unsophistocated, crass, and ignorant. I'm not sure what the travel scene is like at this motel in the summer, but there were absolutely no out-of-state travelers to my knowledge. According to her, there are many tourists from all over the country that come to this motel in the summer and visit the area. I find that extremely hard to believe considering she can be very argumentative when asked common questions that tourists would inquire about. Her response usually comes in the form of indignance and cynicism, ending with something like " what's that supposed to mean?"
We are considering revisiting Maine with some friends in the summer during lobster season, but we will definitely never stay at this motel again. The problem is not really the motel, or the accommodations, or the location (which is actually convenient). The family that owns and operates the motel are very nice and hospitable people, and they know how to relate to people of varying intelligences and experiences. The family members are hard-working people willing to be flexible to accommodate their customers to their best ability. If it had been a matter of doing business with them only, this review would reflect a much different perception. Unfortunately, the front desk manager, who resides on the property, does not appreciate that her horrible attitude is a gross misrepresentation of the motel and ultimately results in people not returning to the motel although they may frequently visit Maine, particularly the Rockport area. The front desk manager never offered an apology for her attitude or even acted as though she had any remorse for her attitude. Maybe she has been insensitive to her rudeness for so long, she's incapable of socially acceptable behavior. The front desk manager puts a damper on the title of her position and does not represent the travel and tourism/ hospitality industry very well. Oddly enough there are other employees that live on the property which seems very strange to us. We are very well traveled and have never encountered a situation where so many employees live on property. We also heard through the grapevine that this is the best option for them.
To our fellow world travelers; whether you visit Maine for business, leisure, or exploration, we would highly advise that based on what you've read of this review, that you would make your best decision whether or not to stay at this motel. It is a choice where you invest your money and time, because when all is said and done, all you take with you when you leave are the intangible memories. Although you can't control how best according to plan your trip goes, anyone who's been around can tell you something always happens. Sometimes the undesirable things that happen are out of your control, but when it comes to peoples' attitudes, an allowance of this type of "mishap" would be counterproductive.
It's a shame that in today's society, some people can't handle a minimal amount of minimal responsibility minimally given to them with minimal expectations.

We are sorry that this guest was unhappy with their stay with us... This person stayed with us for over a month so it is difficult to respond to this review since most of the criticism has to do with personality issues and not with the property or accommodations itself... We apologize for any misunderstandings or difficulty with our staff.... Indeed, the review speaks very highly of our room accommodations, facilities, location and the management/owners but obviously problems arose from personal interactions with one of the staff people. We would have gladly worked with this customer had we known there was a customer service issue. We certainly apologize for any bad behavior and would simply ask that the person who wrote this review to please contact Howard Beale at their earliest convenience.

“Pleasantly surprised”

Ledges By the Bay

We had extended family get-together in Rockport and we reserved four rooms at the Ledges By the Bay. On behalf of the whole family (fourteen of us), we say thank you for a great stay! The rooms were warm and bright, and there was enough space for all of us to gather in one for a drink and to plan our evening activities. The views of the bay were gorgeous, the showers just right, the morning coffee, pastries and breads a wonderful addition; and as mentioned previously by other reviewers...the rooms were unbelievably clean. The staff was attentive and responsive to requests. It was a great stay, and an outstanding price for the area.
