Owner description: Celebrating Maine’s Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America’s greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 10,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the nation's largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

“Eclectic collection in a beautiful building”

I love the library and could happily spend days there.

The collection is eclectic and interesting. The gift shop is amazing.

Definitely a Rockland must do.

“Wyeth is a wonder...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2014

Follow up with a tour of the Olson House... Christina is alive and well within that old farmhouse! Wyeth's perspective of how he approached the Christina's World Series is interesting and enlightening.

“Shaker Show at Farnsworth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

We have visited the Farnsworth many times in the past, but last weekend we drove to Rockland specifically to see the well-publicized show, "The Shakers: From Mount Lebanon to the World." I have always admired the simplicity and elegance of Shaker-style design and the beautiful workmanship in Shaker artifacts.
This show was a real eye-opener in that just about every piece in it (with the exception of a couple of beautiful straw bonnets and some of the tools) ran contrary to my previous notions about Shaker furniture and design in general. The workmanship on much of the furniture was not what I would call "fine." The wood used was often not hardwood. Most of the furniture was painted -- in fact, the chair in the beautiful poster for this exhibit, a cherry chair hung upside down on the wall, was nowhere to be found!
The experience was worthwhile for the educational value, but it was far from what I had expected to find. As we arrived, I inquired about no-flash photography and was told NO. Thereafter, we were tailed through the gallery. (When someone tells me no, I understand the word, respect the rules, and really don't need supervision.) The sad truth is that there was nothing there I missed being able to photograph. There were no Lilo Raymond moments for me!

We toured several of the other galleries at the Farnsworth while we were there, The show "Coloring Vision: From Impressionism to Modernism" presented minor works but was quite lovely, and it was a refreshing change to see as the wall-color there a lovely deep mauve...and to recognize the echoes of that color in almost every painting in the gallery. We are, however, people who like to also read the placards with each work, and as my accompanying photo will suggest, the very dark background on which the information is printed is quite frustrating and just about unreadable in the gallery's (necessarily) subdued lighting.

The Wyeths are always worth seeing again -- they, for me, are the real reason to go to the Farnsworth.

If you come in the Main Street entrance, please note that those with mobility problems (stairs) will find the procedure for getting to the rest of the museum (and the bathrooms) complicated but not impossible.

“A modest museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

The Wyeth collection was over-advertised. The serious and best works of all three Wyeths are in the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, DE and the Brandywine Art Museum in Chadds Ford, PA. The Shaker exhibit was a superior offering which salvaged the visit.
