My husband and I decided to go north for the weekend and ended up in Rangeley. We chose this hotel because of the website, location, and the fact that they allow dogs and absolutely regretted the decision. Upon arriving, we asked if there were any places locally that were good for looking at stars (we had hoped to catch the Northern Lights). The concierge suggested Saddleback Mountain, but said we wouldn't be able to get to the top at night. We ended up driving around the area, trying to find a decent spot (the following day, another local was able to direct us to several spots that would have been absolutely phenomenal and were relatively close to the hotel - unfortunately, it was too late at that point).
The rooms are very, very small (even compared to small rooms at other hotels). Although clean, the room looked shabby, worn out, and out-dated. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, with worn-out sheets and a blanket. The bedspread looked like it was an original from the 80s and was visibly stained. Even our dog was uncomfortable sleeping on the bed with us. The wireless internet didn't work and we were told that we could get a cable from the main office - which was closed when we stopped by around 10.
Perhaps the biggest issue, however, was the noise. We got in around 1am and the people upstairs were still stomping around. At 1:30, the couple in the room next to us got into a lengthy, drawn out argument that continued for over an hour. Combined with the stomping from upstairs, we didn't get any sleep. Although things quieted down a little around 2:30, the stomping and yelling resumed promptly at around 6am. The HVAC for the room was also apparently faulty, as the fan kept shutting off and our room got quite cold.
Overall, the whole experience was SO bad that we considered leaving at 2am and just driving home so we would have a chance at getting a little sleep. Unfortunately, with no one available to check us out, we were stuck. At several points, I considered going out and sleeping in my car (the near-zero temperatures outside were all that stopped me). Even "breakfast" - which consisted of stale-looking bagels, a substance that might have been cream cheese at some point, and a vat of peanut butter with a visible layer of something on the surface - was far below our lowest expectations.
For what we paid ($15 more than we had paid to stay at a much nicer hotel in Boston a few weeks ago), the room was verging on highway robbery. When my husband went to check out, he had to call someone to come to the front desk. When he mentioned the issues with our experience, he was told that, when we come back, we should just call (an extension) and they would do something about the noise. Other than that, they didn't care at all about our abysmal experience - their half-hearted apology was more like they were upset that we had the nerve to complain. We will definitely NOT be returning, and would advise others to stay away!
