16 miles actually, at least that's what they say. If you've traveled Route 1 across to Bucksport in the last 10 years, you have gone through the construction of the new bridge over the Penobscot River. On the Fort Knox side (southwest) of the bridge, is an observation tower over 400 feet up one of the bridges two towers. In less than a minute, the elevator swoops you to the first level, then two flights of stairs to reach the top of the observatory. Be prepared for floor to ceiling glass windows with information maps in each direction pointing out landmarks. Its a real WOW moment stepping out of the elevator to the glass windows 3 feet in front of you. The top floor is handicap accessible by a special elevator and there are restroom facilities in the parking lot. There is a nominal entry fee as you enter the lot that also gives you access to the old Fort Knox and there are nice facilities for a picnic..If you're headed Down East, this is a nice spot to stop and stretch your legs and get the view of a lifetime.
