“Huge rooms!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

We booked on line about 2 hours before we arrived. We had just finished a 7 day cuise and were travelling from New Jersey to PEI and decided to overnight in Portland. We got an amazing deal! The rooms were quite big, everything was really clean, the kids loved the pool. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a coin laundry down the hall from our rooms, very convenient when you travel with children!

My b/fs company paid for the hotel for his work I know the rate was like 60 or 70 a night..But I was impressed.Very clean.A few minor complaints.but overall great place. The walkways needed de-icing in some places and not enough plugs in the room..other than that..very friendly staff and very clean!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I stayed at the Howard Johnson’s on Riverside St. on December 22nd, 2012. Based on our stay at your Howard Johnson’s, we will not be using this hotel again. Upon our arrival in the room we discovered some cigarette ashes on the floor by the chair near the window. This is a non-smoking room and should not have had cigarette ashes on the floor. In addition, my wife notified the front desk staff of this issue and was told it would be resolved. However, upon our return to the room later that evening the cigarette ashes were still on the floor. In addition to the cigarette ashes on the floor we were subjected to a loud noise coming from the room above our room. Initially we thought the noise originated from a truck outside our window. I don’t know what caused the noise but it kept us awake for most of the night. The last and most disturbing issue we had with this facility was the disgusting conditions we discovered in the hot tub we had hoped to use during our stay. There was a collection of hair and scum in the hot tub and it is obvious that this hot tub is not cleaned properly.

Please accept my apologies for the ashes and noise in your room. I am not sure what would have caused the noise, but we will investigate to ensure it does not recur. I am sorry that we failed to correct the issue with the ashes, we have used your comments in our ongoing training to prevent a similar oversight in the future. With regard to the hot tub condition, we do regularly monitor the chemical balance and cleanliness of both tubs as well as the pool. I have checked our chemical records for that date and can assure you that while the appearance did not meet our usual standards, the sanitizer level was at the proper level to ensure safe usage. I hope that you will take advantage of the offer in my e-mail to you to try us again in the future so that we may offer you a better experience.

Hotel was rated 2.5 stars on Hotwire and mentioned pool + WIFI + restaurant facilities. Pool area was not heated during winter. WIFI worked on and off depending on where in the hotel you were using your smartphone. Restaurant was honestly overpriced and quality of coffee worse than anything we had paid for in the past six months. Reception staff and General Manager delivered stellar service and always friendly to help out. Printed Google Map directions to Portland Tourist Information Centre which was not even necessary since we had a GPS which was appreciated. Kids loved it more than parents and nearby restaurants / stores saved us for late supper or breakfast. Would we go back? Not really - but mainly because Hotwire oversold it since the hotel was fully booked which says it must be good value for money.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to be the same when we saw cleaning crew do their morning run.
