During our trips to the USA staying with friends in Groton M.A we usually take the chance to visit some New England towns. This time we headed for Portland Maine. A really nice town especially the Old Port area which has cobble stones and any number of small independent stores. In fact you are hard pressed to find any of the big store chains.
Often we choose to stay in a B&B as they are more interesting and you get the chance to meet the owners who can be a really useful source of local information. Morrill Mansion is located on Vaughan St. Which is about a 12-15 min walk from the Old Port area depending on how atheletic you are feeling. There are some good quality restaurants within 5 mins. walk if you prefer something less energetic. Portland is getting something of a foodie reputation so if you enjoy good food this is an interesting place to visit.
We made our booking from the UK and David was very helpful making the arrangements. Like most B&Bs the Mansion has limited rooms in this case aprox. 6. Our room was on the first floor (UK version) and was of a good size. Plenty of space for clothes and luggage and the ensuite bathroom was also a reasonable size, very clean and well appointed. There is a residents lounge, where tea/coffee & home-made cookies are available, which is a comfortable place to relax after a days' sightseeing.
Breakfast is a real treat prepared by David himself with a great selection of dishes. Along with the obligatory muffins he baked some different treats the highlight being a lobster souffle which was delicious.
All in all a very pleasant two night stay.
