We went without a reservation and they were able to accommodate us. Very good neighborhood place. Good service, very comfortable.

“Consistently good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

We just moved to the West End last year and this is our neighborhood restaurant. We've been about four times and still learning new things- last visit discovered there is an outdoor courtyard, and just found the seating behind the kitchen. No big deal to cut through the kitchen to get there.
Nice wine list, and a good selection of entrees. If your group has a range of tastes, they should all find something they like. The polenta fries are delicious, and dessert is good if you still have room.

“Not impressed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We went to Caiola's for Sunday brunch. I was somewhat shocked that much of the seating areas are reached by walking through the kitchen. I couldn't help but think of sanitation issues as we were led through the kitchen and past prepared plates of food.

Sanitation further presented itself as an issue when I noticed that one of the coffee mugs pre-set at our table was covered in dried coffee. The waitress kindly replaced it at my request.

And then the food. I didn't survey the rest of our party, but I ordered pancakes and I kept cutting into unmixed portions of the batter. I can't say that I've ever run into such an amateur mistake at any restaurant, of any caliber.

With so many excellent restaurants in Portland, I don't think I'll be returning to Caiola's.

“you'll feel at home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Come dressed any way you want; they will welcome you. We were not "that hungry" so we ordered accordingly. We shared the soup (very thick chowder), the beet salad (yummy), and the special-of-the-day pork-and-sausage-and-vegetable-stew entree (they made us happy by splitting it for us in the kitchen, even though we had not asked them specifically to do this). But we each ordered a delicious dessert! We drink a lot of water, so we asked for a pitcher on the table, and they were very accommodating.

“Friendly owner with average food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

This came highly recommended by our hotel. We were told they have a diverse menu and high quality food. We had a reservation. The place is very quaint. and has good atmosphere. The owner, we think, greeted us and was one of the most friendly people we encountered outside of our hotel staff in Portland; she was great. One of us ordered the burger which we were told was one of the best in town. It was good, but not the best we ever had. They were out of the vegetarian special so there was only one other vegetarian option on the menu which was the cheese cannelloni. They were just OK. The filling was pretty average, but the sauce was good. There could be many other items on the menu that are better than average. The service was friendly.
