Description: Drawing from indigenous food traditions along with those of the Acadians, New Englanders, and other peoples of the North Atlantic, the cuisine of Vinland is an expression of our place and history. Yet the mission is as much about ecology, building the local economy, and teaching good nutrition as it is about great food. We see these four elements as inextricable and mutually reinforcing. Vinland is the first restaurant in the United States to serve 100% local, organic food.

“Exceptional commitment, exceptional meal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

This is such a unique restaurant, completely committed to local resources that are themselves committed to growing/harvesting healthy, organic food fresh and delicious. The result is amazing. Every preparation is an artistic endeavor, thoughtfully and skillfully conceived and rendered. And their knowledge is unsurpassed, and they are happy to talk about what they are doing which adds an educational aspect to dining, if you are interested. David and his staff are also so friendly and earnest that we just love sitting at the bar, chatting with them as they create their masterpieces. A thoroughly satisfying dining experience.

“Farm (and ocean) to Table.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

We spent a couple of days in Portland and were told to try this place.
It certainly is riding the crest of the 'farm to table' craze. Of course if done as well as this place - what's not to like? Service was terrific as well. The premises is done to a very high standard.
The food:
Specifically we had a carpaccio dish (terrific), and a monkfish dish (off the charts for what's typically a somewhat bland fish), and a pork chop (thoroughly marbled and properly cooked). There were also a couple of surprise 'tastes' between courses. Intercourses ?
The desert was a cake made from buckwheat. As a confirmed choco-haulic - I'd say this was excellent - even without chocolate being a part of it!
The wine list seemed a bit pricey for what was offered, but over all the place offers a good value. The owner and staff were outgoing and very pleasant. Enjoy.

“Deliciously fresh cooking and very friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

Absolutely wonderful meal - the food was so tasty and a lot of thought had obviously gone into each dish! Definitely worth trying the chilled cucumber soup which was divine and the best I've ever had! Great wine and very knowledgable staff who were very friendly and attentive. Loved how everything is locally sourced - a very clever concept!

We would go back in a shot, and will do, when we are back in Portland!

“A phenomenal EXPERIENCE, not just a meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

We went to Vinland to celebrate our anniversary and it was MUCH more than expected. The owner/chef David is a genius with vision and standards. And Alex, his counterpart behind the bar is of a similar caliber of genius. The food is 100% local, which means no olive oil or lemon, making it stand out from likely 99% of the restaurants in the world. The boundaries created within the restaurant concept lends to unique culinary creations and flavors, utilizing cooking techniques both steeped in tradition and cutting edge.

As appetizers, we had the Halibut, mussels, and raw beef (we ordered two but they brought three). The halibut was buttery, the mussels were superb and my only complaint about the raw beef was that the portion was too big. We had the pork as an entree, which was succulent. And the steak. The steak was hands down one of the best I've ever had. Prepared to perfection with an accoutrement of flavors. One previous reviewer posted a negative review of the steak. I'm not sure how to explain that only to recommend telling the chef if anything is not to your liking. He is beyond accommodating and is incredibly passionate and dedicated to providing a superb dining experience.

And then there were the cocktails. Prepared with local spirits and ingredients, I only wish you could order half sizes, or flight them so you can try several. Alex, their creator, is a masterful alchemist. The pine gimlet was one of the best drinks I've had. I usually do not like mixed drinks as I find them too sugary and sweet, often drinking my spirits neat or on the rocks at best. However the infusions and flavors, with just the perfect bit of local sweetness offered a bouquet of flavor that is not to be missed.

This is food that invokes conscious awakening if you are open to it. I HIGHLY recommend trying it at least once. We can't wait to go back...

“Nice idea, but . . .”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

We were very excited to try Vinland, and out of our party of four,
I was the one least satisfied with the experience. The space is
delightful and the presentation from the food to the check is very
well thought out. That said, I was disappointed in the food. It lacked any flavor which surprised me since I have been on a stringent diet of little oil and no sauces, but my very plain diet food was better than what we had at the restaurant. However,
others in our party were more satisfied, although no one said
they would return again.
