“Seafood to sigh for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

I was tired and cross. We were seated immediately where we asked (so we could watch the chefs cook, entertainment and dinner!). Service was expert, friendly and not fawning. Food was expertly prepared and the appetizer and cheese plates were artfully selected for taste pairings. Roasted kale lifted the beet salad with chevre out of the routine and into original and sublime. My sole Francais was served in a sizzling skillet, and for once no one said "be careful it's hot" which pleased me, since it was so OBVIOUSLY hot. Delicious. Even the squashes, not my fav, were scrumptious due to the basil green sauce. Masterful restaurant. I left happy.

“In Portland, hit the Street”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

As a first-time visitor to Portland, I did not need to perform extensive research to determine that Street and Co. probably would be a great choice for an evening of solo dining. Location? In the heart of Portland's Old Port, a short stroll from my hotel. Ingredients? The freshest seafood imaginable, including massive lobsters, and an assortment of oysters, mussels and daily catches. Reviews? All of the top sources told me it was a "go". And go I did.

Of course, there always is peril in relying 100 percent on how something looks on paper. We have the Titanic, the Prince Charles and Diana marriage, and ethanol fuel as ready proof of that. I walked in on a somewhat chaotic Friday night. Every table, every bar stool and much of the standing room was occupied, and the claustrophobic open kitchen was bursting with activity. I can only imagine there have been frequent violent collisions between shellfish and man in that tiny space since the restaurant's 1989 founding.

The hostess gave the me the news: More than 1 hour. But not to worry. I could be seated in the cozy lounge area, order a drink, even an appetizer. I took the offer. In no time, I was sipping scotch and sampling a half-dozen silky oysters, and there was plenty of conversation about the cuisine at the bar, where more eating than swilling was under way. One woman raved about coming back for the scallops in Pernod liqueur and cream ($30.95).

When I was seated an hour later (as promised) I flirted with the idea of trying the scallops, but how could an accidental Midwesterner with a free night in Maine not make the obvious choice: a big, honking whole lobster? It is served, waitress Heather warned, in the shell with various utensils for extraction, atop a bed of linguine with butter and garlic ($31.95). Street and Co.'s motto is, "Taste is Real, Simple". Fresh Maine lobster on a bed of lightly tossed linguine fulfills that promise abundantly, as did the Swiss chard and roasted organic beet salad ($9.95) that preceded it. Despite operating at capacity, the pace of service was steady and upbeat.

The moody Travel Channel TV personality Anthony Bourdain apparently passed through Portland back in 2009. He taped one of his show's segments at Street and Co., which he characterized as feeling "dull", according to a Maine-based dining blog, the Chubby Werewolf.

I can report that an evening at Street and Co. is anything but dull. It is, in fact, a destination that will inspire the palate and restore the soul amid the din of conversation and clanking pots and pans. About that I have no reservations.

“Street and company was excellent food, terrific ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013 via mobile

The meal was terrific. Love the Decor. Lobster bread pudding was great. Duck spinach salad was excellent. Mussels were the best ever. The scallops dish was rich but wonderful. Couldn't force ourselves to eat dessert. I'm sure it would have been wonderful. We had come directly from a 15 mile hike and came straight from the trailhead. We were only minimally underdressed.

“A good spot for dinner in Portland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

Downtown Portland is often busy, and Street and Company is no exception. However, our dinner reservations were honored immediately. Service was good and prompt. All four dinners at our table were very good. A nice menu, very good meals, very good service. What else can you ask for? Will definitely return in the future.
