“Stuck in the 70s”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

If old diners with character are your thing, you will get a kick out of J's Oyster Bar. I went there a few times during the colder months. I have a feeling that it's a whole different space in the summer when the patio opens up and the tourists come, but when the inside is the only choice, the visitor will feel like they stepped back a few decades. Food was good and not too pricey. Service was great. Decor is not for all tastes - but I thought it was fantastic!

“As down as DownEast gets”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

Maine diner seafood bar reality check. Everybody from truck drivers to lawyers to students eats and drinks here. The oysters are only average, but inexpensive. Service is quick and friendly. My lobster roll was outstanding, served without mayo on a perfectly grilled bun, and only $13.95. I will go back for many more of those. This place is a slice o' life in Portland, still owned and run by the original family. Worth a visit.

“Menu NOT for the landlubber”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Apparently this is a popular local attraction and if you like seafood it may be worth a visit, however, the menu is limited if you want meat and potatoes. Ambiance is strictly bar-like. My seafood eating colleagues loved their dinners.

“cheese cake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

no one has mentioned the best part - the excellent cheese cake they make themselves. surprised that it is always so busy, even in winter. Sometimes they have happy hour oysters, all you can eat. the samplers are worth trying, instead of lobster dinner. Too bad they ended the small bucket of clams (maybe because it was inexpensive), the large is too much for one person. The check adds up very rapidly here. It is surprising that J's oysters are basically one kind, and not from Maine, or at least the one time I asked where they were from. Get Beer - sampler - cheesecake. And maybe some baked oysters.

“Small town feel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

I enjoyed a delicious lobster roll, chips and a couple drinks. A neat place to spend a little time on a Thursday night.
