“Still a good place to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

Had not been to Fore St in awhile but food is still outstanding. Always too much to eat but delicious! Atmosphere is one of the best in Portland Me. Pricey but worth it for the extra care given.

“Lives up to the hype!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

There's not much to say that hasn't been said already. The food is amazing. Even the most simple dishes were clearly prepared with care and thoughtfulness. My only compliant was that we were seated in a side room away from the open kitchen. If I'm ever in Portland again I will go back but would request to be seated in the main room.

“Great dining in Portland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

We had a lovely meal in a really cool space. Smoked cod cakes were terrific. Grilled quail with hushpuppies and halibut with sardine aioli and braised chard with pork belly also delicious. Service was great as were the choices of wines bu the glass. It can be pricey, but it's a really great meal.

“Not what it used to be”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014

We've been going to Fore St since it opened in 1996. A pleasant place with good food has turned into an obnoxious McDonalds like experience. The place is loud and rushed. The waiters are all barking the same lines, sweeping plates away before you are done. We dropped well over 100 bucks and were out in 45 minutes......

Oh well.

“Folks Build Their Trip Around This Restaurant For A Reason”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

Useful information: 1) Very convenient location; 2) Good to reserve well in advance as it can be crowded and you might be turned away; 3) It is seriously expensive but you know that from the menu before you order.

Don't be fooled by the outside appearance. It is not an arsenal or a warehouse. It IS a serious culinary experience that you won't likely forget.

This place has won many awards. Gourmet Magazine's top 50 restaurants in 2002, being placed 16th on the list; Chef Sam Hayward was named the top chef in the Northeast in 2004 by the James Beard Foundation; the Atlantic Magazine named Fore Street a "restaurant to build a trip around"; It was nominated by the Beard Foundation for the award of 'Most Outstanding Restaurant' in 2011; etc.

The menu is changed daily and built around what is fresh that day. Seafood is out of the ocean to your plate the same day. Prep chefs start early in the morning to build the ingredients needed for that day's dishes. They make nearly everything from scratch: I had a beet salad with a special dressing that was prepared on site. All bread, desserts, sides, and sauces are made on site. Presentation is masterful and enjoyable.

My wife, adult son, and I made an evening of consuming special appetizers, main courses, special order sides, and desserts. We spent three hours carefully picking different items and then tasting them all.

In summary: WOW. This is simply one of the best dinners I have had anywhere. It was extraordinary. We all agreed with how special this place is.

If you do all of the courses and really experience the tastes then count on $80-$90 per person with tip. Wine or drinks would add more.

We don't like to pay this much for dinner ever but in this case were pleased with the evening. And, the restaurant was full on a Tuesday night.
