“Charming little museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

The Maine Jewish Museum is a charming little museum and art gallery that deserves a visit. Like the rest of Portland it is an easily walkable destination on the east side of town. The small art gallery and history museum is staffed by enthusiastic volunteers who we found to be knowledgeable and passionate about their fledgling endeavor. The upstairs museum contains Interesting displays on the Maine Jewish summer camps and the history of Jews in the state. Although the art gallery was between shows when we visited, they often host interesting art and artists. The building also contains two pretty meeting rooms for worship, weddings and other events. The upstairs main temple is especially beautiful. Well worth a visit to learn about this relatively little-known bit of Maine history. At the time we were there they were installing an elevator to the second floor.

Thanks for your comments, Brooklyn1612! We're happy to let our visitors know that expansion is underway. This includes a 4 story elevator and new handicapped-accessible bathrooms. Please come back again in the spring - you'll find increased accessibility and a new art exhibit and expanded historical exhibits.

“Do Stop By”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Not much of a museum but glad we spent a half hour here. The synagogue and its history are fascinating and it was great to hear how it has been rejuvenated. They really appreciate visitors and make you feel right at home. You should be able to find short term street parking. Don't forget to leave a small donation.

“Very interesting!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

This small museum and historic synagogue are well worth a brief visit. The staff is exceedingly friendly and informative. The exhibit on Jewish Maine camps is fun. Learned a lot.
