“Happy Trails!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

Again another nice clean well maintained La Quinta Hotel! The staff at reception were extremely helpful and nothing was too much for them. For my family and I this chain has hit the nail on the head. Fridge and microwave in the room and a laundry on site - ideal for travelling with babies and dog friendly to boot! This hotel is slightly out of the town centre but just around the corner from places to eat such as Mac D, Chinese and others. My only critisism was that the breakfast area was too small and got very crowded at breakfast time and mean't that you didn't always find somewhere to sit. But that was no biggy as I just took mine to my room.

Portland is a wonderful city and I must mention to any one travelling with a dog to consider Happy Tails St John Street (http://www.happytailsportland.com/) for doggy daycare so you can go shopping or go anywhere pets are not permitted. If you speak with Becca say Billy the Spaniel sent you. she also has a list of pet friendly restaurants.

Room Tip: Just ask or call in advance

First, the envoronmental control program translates to no air. And the window would not work.
Secondly, there was an issue with the plumbing and there was no manager on duty or maintenance person to fix it. The front deskperson said that they were fully booked, so we had no choicebut to remain in our room. Next, we waited over an hour for the delivery of a salad from the restaurant recommended by the frontdesk. Finally, we canceled our order at 9:00pm on a

Room Tip: The hallway would be more comfortable than any hotel room.

Thankfully, we stayed just one night. We reserved a non-smoking room two weeks in advance and once we checked in, we were given a smoking room and unfortunately they were completely booked. There was very little the flustered desk clerk could do to help accommodate us, nor did there appear to be a manager on duty (we asked for one). So we got a bottle of room spray. Thanks for nothing. The smell was so bad and you couldn't open the window more than an inch. The carpeted floor had this damp feel to it (walking barefoot, which was a BAD idea), the bathroom had quite a bit of mold and mildew. Normally for one night, you could suck it up, but for $200/night?! I'm surprised by the amount of positive reviews for this place. I can usually overlook a lot, but I'd have to recommend that you stay elsewhere, unless you want to leave, smelling like stale smoke.
I will say that the floor we were on was very quiet. The bed itself was comfortable. Besides the desk clerk, the housekeeping folks were pleasant and there was a decent spread for the continental breakfast.

We choose this hotel because we wanted something pet friendly and under $100 for this trip. This criteria can make things difficult. I made the reservation without expecting much, and was a little on the nervous side.

Upon arrival I was greeted by very welcoming front desk staff, and all the staff I encountered were pleasant. The room was basic and clean (though the microwave, underneath, could have been a little cleaner).

Breakfast area is crowded so we ate in our rooms but this was not an issue for us.

The only drawback to this hotel is the location. It is less than a 5 minutes walk to the Sea Dogs ballpark, but not within walking distance to downtown/old port (we knew this when we made the reservation). The neighborhood is rundown and industrial, but we felt safe and walked around with our dog. The train track is next door, there are milk delivery trucks going in and out of Hood, and the side street leads to the highway so it is fairly noisy.

This ended up being a bit better than we expected.

Room Tip: pets are only allowed on the 1st floor, so if you aren't a pet person you may want to ask for a...

As much as the La Quinta isn't known for luxury and charm, looking back, it was one of the more solid places we stayed during our road trip around New England, which was primarily dominated by more unique places than this. But, when you think about it, it was just really reliable. Clean, big room, and decent continental breakfast, all for a very affordable price. The main thing I would note is the location. We started out our trip by trying to walk to the downtown area. We did, but it was two miles and quite a walk! The rest of the trip we took cabs (which were only about five dollars every time). There are some things within walking distance, but the main part of town is a good bit away - then again, I found that the money you save on the room is still worth it, compared to the more centrally-located hotels.
