I frequent the place at least once a week so I thought I should finally step up and add my review.
The setting is elegant but not over the top at all: clean and airy and light. There is ample space around the bar for anyone who likes to watch the process. The service is great and friendly, every time.
Everything is the freshest youre going to find anywhere! All super original and delicious. My ONLY admonishion would be this: it's the real deal; that is, some of the dishes are so "authentic" they are for the hard-core sushi lovers only. There are items I find so freshly "fishy" I can't really enjoy them - but I'm a wimp when it comes to eating sea urchin and the like, which is MY problem not Myiake's...! And, even at that, I can appreciate how absolutely fresh all the ingredients are and how artistically they are prepared.
There is a saki list only an aficionado could really get all the way thru - and most of the great ones are quite dear, though there are several really good ones at reasonable, if not everyday affordable prices.
The whole experience isn't cheap - but then again, at the price you won't feel you overpaid for a sushi experience you would be hard pressed to find in many other cities. There are four sushi/Japanese restaurants right in Portland; but, though we love Ben Kays too when we're in the mood for it, Myiake is in a class all by itself ANYWHERE - not just in Portland. Enjoy!
