“Unusual historical tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

The Portland Observatory is a very interesting place, and we bring all our visitors here. Built in 1807, it wasn't an astronomical facility, but rather a maritime signaling tower, a pre-telegraph means for observing arriving ships out at the entrance to Casco Bay and communicating their identities to the port below. It's the only such observatory remaining in the U.S.. Admission is $9, and for that you get an interesting tour by a docent.

Stopped by with my 11 year old daughter today. Really glad we did. Got the AAA discount. Guided tour was just beginning. Good history lesson and great sights.

“Enjoyed it and learned alot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Guide takes you all the way to the top of the tower, stopping on each floor to explain the detailed history of the building. You also get a great history lesson on the history of Portland itself, plus an amazing view of the city. I definitely recommend this to anyone visiting the area.

“MUST SEE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Take the time to visit this naval observatory - the only one still in existence in the USA - a very rich and important history. It is the last maritime signal station in the USA! GREAT views of the area.
