“Very expensive for a regional Art Museum”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

They wanted $17 for the permanent and temporary exhibitions, I thought this was exorbitant and declined to pay. Drop the price and you'll get a lot more visitors.

“Gem of a museum in the heart of Portland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

A perfectly sunny warmish fall day in downtown Portland - how excellent. We found easy parking at a garage nearby. It was suggested that for the Winslow Homer exhibit to reserve ahead and we did. It was an eye opener of an exhibit with rooms of Winslow Homer oils and watercolors. It is with the artists eye that one gets to appreciate this gift we call Maine and all it has to offer. Winslow Homer invites you in to sense the mood of the sea whether it be winter or fall or spring or summer. Although well known as an illustrator Homer very much captured the feeling of a moment in nature. Loved it all. The rest of the museum has extraordinary exhibits with art mediums ranging from American Impressionism to French Impression and with a taste of modernism, Surrealism and much in between. A most pleasant way to spend a few hours. The restaurant food was quite wonderful but the mood in this restaurant is lacking. It is on the lower level and feels so dark and uninviting - one wall in particular is bare. Sad as they could extend an opportunity for budding artists to display their canvases and also brighten up that space. A little music would be appreciated. Add a little mood lighting and voila. Again a missed opportunity.

“A little gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Spent a couple of hours here on a day in Portland - well worth the visit. Some fabulous art including some lovely Impressionist works. Admittedly we did go to see their Hoppers which unfortunately were in storage as they had recently been out on loan - never mind! Staff were very friendly and full of interesting information about the museum and their displays.

“Oceans of Fascination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Currently there is an outstanding special exhibit of Winslow Homer's oil and watercolor paintings, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The exhibit room is very large with lots of space to share gazing-studying the large and small pieces if you find yourself there on a popular rainy afternoon or weekend. The main museum has a lovely French Impressionist group and other world art. Their collection of modern art was vibrant with the works by Rockwell Kent, George Bellows and I especially liked Robert Henri. In another part of the museum, there were sublime statues (after Greek-Roman styles) with a very impressive President U.Grant and more outstanding American Primitive and White Mt. Art. A word of caution: Be prepared to pay for parking if you can't find anything street side. Also, one has to pay for coffee refills in their Cafe, which I felt was sort of tacky when everything else was first-rate. FYI: one has to pay extra to see the Homer exhibit as well. On the whole, it was an enjoyable afternoon.

“Fabulous art on all the floors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Covers a lot of periods in art history. Easy to get around. Nice gift shop. Special tour of Winslow Homer's studio and home at Prout's Neck can be included if you make your reservations well in advance. The historic house attached to the museum is a special treat.
