“Spectacular spot at Popham Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

We came here by default, since our room at another B&B was double booked. WOW! sometimes you get lucky. The house and grounds are what you might dream about in wishing you could go back to the robber-baron days and be one of the elite. A wonderful shingle-style "cottage" from the 1890's, the Stone Manor has all of the great woodwork, leaded glass and fireplaces you could want, and a setting that cannot be equaled - on a lake just inside the barrier trees from the open surf of Popham beach, a quarter mile from the village of Popham, with it's old houses and the fort. The owners have lovingly restored the place, but with an eye to comfort and practicality. Low key, casual and very much like a home away from home, it struck us as a perfect place to spend as much time as you can get. Even with the beach and the surf calling, it was tough to get beyond the huge lawn, with it's comfortable adirondack chairs, copper beech tree and view of Silver Lake. The breakfast was spectacular as well. I only wish i was young and getting married again, so we could have the wedding there!

We would like to extend a warm thank you to Jane for making our days at Stonehouse manor unforgettable. The property is exquisite, the house is warm and welcoming and the rooms are a perfect combination of luxury meets country. Oh, and the breakfasts are to die for!! Our family has been visiting Jane and her lovely home for nearly 10 years and we eagerly await our next visit! Even in a rainy summer, it is a beautiful spot for a relaxing getaway.

We spent a wonderful four days with our family of five, including our three-year-old. The rooms were very comfortable, and the views are amazing. We had an excellent breakfast every morning. Even on rainy days, we were happy to be there. But probably the best feature of all was Jane who made us feel right at home, and made wonderful breakfasts!

Stonehouse is a close walk to the beautiful Popham Beach, and the B&B also has access to a pretty lake where you can canoe and kayak.

"We had fun in the stone house!" -- Daughter, age 7.

We had our wedding reception at the Stonehouse Manor and it was the best experience possible. Our wedding ceremony was at the Popham Chapel near the Stonehouse Manor.
The place has beautiful gardens and overlooks a large pond. It is also right around the corner from Popham beach. This place is just georgous if you are looking to have a wedding outside. You can have drinks out on the lawn, dine under a tent, play some yard games and enjoy a bonfire in the evening lit with torches.
Jane took good care of us and catered to our every need for the whole weekend. Her staff were also very friendly. She has coordinated quite a few weddings and definitely knows what she is doing. What little details we forgot she was able to cover. We had a lot of family and friends from out of town that stayed and the place was able to accommodate up to 16 people for the weekend. There are four rooms in the main house and all but one has their own private bathroom. The carriage house is separate and has a mini kitchen. We found every room to be unique and cozy. Our room had a king bed and a beautiful view of the pond. One thing though, our room had a TV but no cable. At night you can even hear the fog horn that can be relaxing. Breakfast each morning was delicious!

We just finished our 11th summer of staying at the Stonehouse...the first year, we had such a wonderful experience (Jane UPGRADED our room...from Garden Room to Lake View) that we added on a day and have added on days ever since. We are treated like royalty, the other guests who stay have always been interesting and fun to share the breakfast (and WHAT a breakfast!!) table with, its a nice walk to the ocean (which you can hear at night) and I love the view of the lake and gardens. Want another plus...NO MOSQUITOS!!!! You can walk the wonderful grounds down to the lake bite free, or sit under the copper beech and enjoy the breezes. My husband is a fisherman and the Dennis's are very tolerant of his sprawl. This is the place to go to relax...although we shared our week with another fisherman who brought a bike and a kayak and was on the go constantly (his wife did what I did...walked and read and relaxed). Don't come here if you can't live without your blackberry or have to be connected to the outside world 24/7 (there is a wireless connection; people with Verizon will have a hard time getting cell phone coverage which is Verizon's fault)...this is MAINE, the way life should be!!!!

We had an awful experience never before encountered anywhere in our very broad travels when we booked a room at Stonehouse Manor for the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. First, it was difficult to get to talk to the owner. She was in Florida in early May when we started calling. Didn't hear from her for several days. She finally returned my call and agreed to rent us the Bay View Suite for that Saturday. She explained that there would be an extra charge of $35 since it was a holiday weekend and we were only booking for one night. I said that was fine. She said she didn't need a credit card since she was away; she would just collect the room rate when we arrived. So, after a long day at a graduation and a 40-minute drive down the finger of land to the Stonehouse Manor, we arrived. We were very tired and looking forward to a nap with a view of the ocean. Jane greeted us and as we were bringing our luggage in, she casually mentioned that we she had changed us and we were not in the the room she had told us was ours, "because someone else was staying longer and said they wanted that room." We told her that was unfair and unethical, since she had told us we had a specific room for this night with certain qualities - bath in room, views etc. She showed us other rooms -neither of them with the views and bath arrangements of the reserved room and then showed us a "cabin", really an outlying shack which was claustrophic and musty-smelling. She acknowledged that she was wrong to have changed our reservation and said in the future wouldn't promise people specific rooms! So at 5:30 on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend we had to reverse and drive the 40 minutes up the peninsula and begin the search for a place to stay. We did find a waterfront location, but it was several hours later and it really put a damper on our weekend. So, buyer beware - you certainly cannot count on what Jane Dennis says when you reserve. It's pot luck at best!

There are days when you just can't take it any more, and my husband and I had one of those last Saturday. We still had work to do over the weekend, but we decided that if we were going to have to spend the weekend working, we ought to at least have an incredible view. We decided to run away for the night to Phippsburg, ME, a tiny town on the "fingers" of the Maine coast, about an hour north of Portland. We tried the Popham Beach Bed & Breakfast first, but they were full. The recommended the Stonehouse Manor, and we couldn't be more grateful.

Jane and Tim were the most magnificent hosts. We sipped hot tea while we worked on the beautiful sun porch overlooking the lake, and when our computers wouldn't work with the Manor's wireless, Jane even went so far as to loan us her own laptop to e-mail our assignments in before deadline. The only way it could have been better is if we could have skipped the working part and spent the afternoon walking on the beach, which is a five minute, lovely walk away.

Our room, the Lake View Suite, couldn't have been cozier. The bed was the perfect cushiness without being too soft. If it wouldn't have been totally inappropriate, I would have stayed in the velvety robe and slippers all day. And the love seat and chair in front the huge windows made the perfect place to sip my morning's first cup of coffee.

Jane recommended a fantastic restaurant - Solo Bistro in Bath - for dinner, and the next morning, she cooked one of the most glorious breakfasts I've ever had at a B&B: omelets stuffed with ripe cherry tomatoes, spinach and herbed cheese; blueberry pancakes with maple syrup; homemade toasted bread with butter; and a plateful of delectable fruits. The coffee was also fantastic - a must in my opinion.

We begrudgingly left to go back to even more work, but we would have loved to stay the entire week. I'm not sure I would ever tire of a life in Phippsburg at Stonehouse Manor.
