“Decent food, nice view!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2008

Had lunch here over the weekend. The choices were typical bar/grill food, but everything was quite tasty and the servers were super-friendly and the service was fast. It was a beautiful day outside, and the view from the back porch is lovely! Lunch for 2 with soft drinks, entrees and an appetizer came to under $30.

We stayed at Peaks Island House in September 2007. I reserved two room by their internet web site. The price was $125 per room. The site said it had a restaurant and that is would store our luggage so we can explore the island the day we checked out.

When we got to the room, the rate on the door was $115 a night (this being in season - which I believe we were not). Also, the restaurant was closed - and on this island the choices are very limited. The hotel people were no where to be found. We never signed in ( a note was given telling us the key was in the room and that we would be contacted later in the day-which we were not) and we stayed in our room until about 11:00 a.m. the next day wondering how we would check out and finally saw the housekeeper to turn in our keys.

Because we had no where to store our luggage we left the island early.

I did email the owner and was told sorry and she reduced the price by $10 (the rate of $115 on the door.) She said she wasn't there because she has another job and the restaurant was closed because she lost her chef.

Overall, the experience was not as pleasurable as it should be. I would caution anyone to contact the owner directly before booking and asking the correct questions because obvioulsy you will not find it on the site.

The plus side is that the view is wonderful but the place is an older building. I believe I would not stay there again.

Peaks Island is the second largest island in Casco Bay which is off the coast of Portland, Maine. It is the closest island to Portland and can be reached by ferry in less than 30 minutes.
There are two inns on Peaks: The Inn on Peaks Island and Peaks Island House. Both inns are a 5 minute walk from the ferry. There are also many homes for rent on Peaks island.
I have stayed on Peaks on one other occassion when I rented a house on the beach with friends. However, this 4th of July weekend I rented a room at the Peaks Island House. It was wonderful.
The inn is close to the ferry. This means you don't need to bring your car on the ferry because you can walk your bags up the hill to the inn. While the rooms are not fancy, they are clean, very comfortable, reasonably priced, and they are 100 yards from the ocean! Each room has access to a common deck where you can read or sit and look out on the water. We had Room 1 which was great except we were the first chairs on the deck so others had to walk by us if they exited via the deck.
The restaurant is above the rooms but since it is open from 11:30-9:30 you barely notice it's there. Until, of course, you're hungry! Then it's an easy walk up a flight of steps to cold Maine beers, great sandwiches, and friendly service.
Our room had a ceiling fan, which was over the table which made it less effective, and a floor fan. The breeze off the ocean kept the room cool during the days (when it was mid-80's outside) and at night. While the rooms do not have phones, they have a ton of cable channels if the weather turns (or the World Cup is on) during your stay.
A few things to consider when you stay on the island: Check the ferry schedule before you leave. If you're going to bring your car on the ferry you should arrive at least one hour before the ferry departs. If you're going to park your car in Portland be aware that the ferry lot fills up quickly. There is a great lot on Pearl and Fore St. It's not 24 hours but it's only $16/day. However, you will need to take the parking and walking in mind when you're planning.
Peaks Island, and the Peaks Island House, is a wonderful way to spend a weekend or a week. You can take the ferry back to Portland for shopping or meals and the ferry company has a 5-pack of ferry passes at a nice discount if you ask.
I would go back in a minute and wish I didn't have to leave!!
