I'm staying around the corner from this place visiting family. It used to be a so-so breakfast place, I was looking for a decent dinner out and drinks. It is now an Irish pub. In the summer it has a patio and I hear is quite busy - this time of year is very quiet. I did not expect my excellent experience. Staff are extremely friendly and fun, but the star was the food. If it had been a little warmer and the salad a little more interesting I would have given it 5 stars.
I had a HUGE piece of baked haddock and expected the usual - overdone. I received a PERFECTLY cooked piece of fish, presented beautifully on a square of PERFECTLY DONE potato gratin (not too cheesy, potatoes not mushy but just done through, perfect portion). The fish was topped with a very light crumbly topping and a pretty squiggle of lightly seasoned mayo, and the most delightful little pile of some basil/oil salad that I could have eaten a bucket of, it was so delicious I carefully portioned out the basil so I got a little in every bite. Reasonably priced considering the quality of the dish and the fact that I was IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE MAINE IN JANUARY. As said, if it was a tad warmer I'd have given it 5 stars and I NEVER give 5 stars to anything, ever. I was very satisfied with my meal.
Again staff is very friendly. This place is kind of small and cozy, but is tastefully decorated and modern. Those who like Irish culture will appreciate some of the decorative items, but I was more interested in all the vinyl in the ladies room (juice newton and carly simon, for example) which was very clean. I enjoyed my experience at this restaurant very much.
I also note that after dinner I had two too many whiskeys and my lovely waitress gave me a lift home which I thought was above and beyond and a very nice thing to do. Great visit. Highly recommended and nice to know there is some very fine food around here this time of year.
