Monhegan Is. is the most amazing place on the east coast. The peacefulness and beauty is beyond discription. This is a MUST visit place for anyone who enjoys nature at it's finest. We have been 5 times and will return again and again.

“The magic of Monhegan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2011

Monhegan is very special. 12 miles off the coast of Maine, it's an island of beauty and simplicity, a place to get away to for some real relaxation and quiet. My husband and I go every year for one week and stay in a rented cottage. There are no cars on Monhegan, just a few trucks that cart food and wares and luggage to and from the ferries that arrive several times a day.
Monhegan is a mile long, half-mile wide, and its "sidewalk" is a dirt path that leads you into the little village, out to the rocks and hiking trails, or up to the lighthouse and museum, or over to the duckpond to feed the ducks or out to Cathedral Woods. Monhegan is known for its artists and you will see them everywhere, sketching, painting and photographing because the light on the island is so good.
Bring some good walking/hiking shoes, a flashlight to walk the path at night as there are no streetlights. Be prepared to be awed by the stars and enjoy the big dipper as never before! Bring a warm fleece or sweater and rain gear. Enjoy freshly caught lobster at Fish beach and some of the best fish and clam chowder in Maine. Stay and dine at the Island Inn with a view of the sunset, or the Monhegan House. Enjoy a pizza and some ice cream at the Novelty, treats that taste extra good 12 miles out to sea! Bring your own beer or wine, or buy it at one of the stores, and enjoy it with your meal. Shop at the Black Duck for that perfect gift to bring back and enjoy a cappoccino or hot chocolate with homemade muffins and donuts while browsing. Have lunch at Carina and Carina II, which both, like all the other places to eat, have nothing but the freshest, local ingredients. Or pack a lunch to go for a hike around the island. Most of all, relax and enjoy the simple beauty of Monhegan.

“Excellent Place to visit for peace and quiet, to get unplugged!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

My sister decided to get married here and while I didn't know what to expect, no tv's, no street lights, no phones, I had no idea how much I would enjoy my weekend here! This place is amazing, We stayed in the Pierce Cottage, The rooms were clean, comfortable and overall very relaxing. While we didn't spend much time in the room, the staff was AMAZING. The breakfast was out of sight, from the blueberry stuffed french toast to the delicious coffee - Our wedding weekend couldn't have been more perfect. While you are there check out the amazing fish and chips place called "HOT FAT" - don't be afraid to eat fried food, the scallops were delicious and never bothered my stomach - not a big fried food person, don't forget your flashlight for night walking. The stars alone are worth it - (in the sky, not celebrities!)
