It was a special birthday and to celebrate I wanted to explore Avebury properly. So my son Googled a place to stay and found the White Horse in Compton Bassett. And what a lucky find!

I had a lovely comfortable in a beautiful setting, delicious meals and a warm friendly atmosphere.

It was certainly the icing on the cake for a lovely birthday.

I stayed at the White Horse after a work colleague had told me how special this B & B is.... and I wasn't disappointed. My room was spotless, well equipped and nicely furnished, with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in! Thoughtful touches too, such as homemade biscuits and a choice of still or sparkling water in your room on arrival. The lovely view from my room looked out onto a field complete with geese, micro pigs and sheep and the surrounding countryside is just stunning, perfect for exploring on a warm spring evening. I can't comment on the pub and its food as I stayed on a Monday evening when these are closed, but reading through other reviews, they certainly get the thumbs up. The White Horse is truly peaceful and relaxing and Tara made me feel very welcome, as did all the team. Breakfast is comprehensive and good quality, served in a very pretty area in the pub . All in all, a great stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

We had a lovely stay here after finding it on Tripadvisor. I think the accommodation being separate from the pub is the best of both worlds, quiet but handy! We ate there in the evening and it was excellent. Beautiful setting, lots to do nearby so we hope to return for a longer stay. The room we had had a little seating area which made it feel like a home from home. Friendly but unobtrusive staff.

We booked our 1 night stay on Late rooms in a last minute flurry of excitement (very unlike us) and as such were a little anxious at what may await. We shouldnt have been. The area is outstandingly beautiful and has an air of calm and serenity. The B&B is separate from the pub which gives it privacy and is adjoining a car park with a wealth of spaces. Our room was on the first floor and beautifully furnished, with a Juliette balcony overlooking geese, lambs and pot bellied pigs. It was truly lovely to wake early in the morning and watch the lambs skipping about their meadow.
We booked a table for dinner and I am so glad that we did. The service was friendly, prompt and highly professional without being at all intimidating. Staff are obviously happy and take a cheery pride in their beautiful pub. We were given a wonderful Amuse Bouche of pea and truffle which was an utter delight. My partner ordered the steak, and I went for the homemade burger. Both were delicious - i could not fault them. All food is handmade on the premises and you can tell with the exquisite flavourings.
After dinner we had a drink in the bar area whilst playing Shut the Box. We met Tara the owner who was such a lovely lady she felt like an old friend right away.
Breakfast in the morning was fresh and satisfying, with great coffee and good choice of cooked breakfasts.
Highly recommended. We will be back (hopefully) before I give birth to twins in the Autumn. Failing that I will try and give fair warning to all to 2 terrors coming along with us!

Room tip: All appear excellent. Possibly ask for one overlooking the meadow.

A lovely village and a very attractive pub with great character. Unfortunately the bedrooms are in a rather drab modernish block at the back of the pub. The room was comfortable and spotlessly clean, but the bathroom was very small and we felt the room was overpriced. the meal in the evening was good, but again overpriced. The bill for the evening meal for 2 people came to £100, With £100 charge for the room (1 night B&B) it turned out to be an expensive and slightly disappointing weekend.
