“Lovely view on one side”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2008

We were referred to the Moorings Inn by a woman at the Bar Harbor Visitor's Center. Upon arriving we noticed it was in the industrial part of town, but since it had a really beautiful view we decided to stay a couple of nights. The bed was really uncomfortable and the sheets smelled musty. There was no air conditioning, so we had to leave the windows open which did not allow for much sleep being in the industrial part of town. There was no soap or shampoo in the bathroom, but I assumed it was because it was a efficiency apartment. That was not the case since the next day these items were left in the bathroom. The stairs are also steep and narrow leading to the efficiency apartments. On the upside the staff was friendly and on the right side of the Inn the view was beautiful. The apartment was fully furnished, just lacking in comfort.

Pros: inexpensive, unassuming, neat, bed was comfortable.
Cons: inconvenient location 30 min from prime park area. mold in bathroom, noisy, basic old decor. Lighthouse wing had thin walls (could hear neighbor voices), deck is narrow & not private, serving as the walkway to the 3 units in this trailer-like addition to the main house. Ancient 19" TV with worn out remote, poor ventilation. Cereal & sweet bread w/coffee for breakfast. One irate customer checked out loudly refusing to pay due to some problem the first morning we were there. Our neighbor was given a roll of duct tape (with a snicker) to try and fix the broken screen door on their sliding door room entrance. Others seemed to like it here...Much better to pay the extra $$$ & stay IN BAR HARBOR! or Northwest Harbor in my opinion.

We selected this place as it was close by weddng events we were attending. From the website the rooms looked great.

When we arrived we were greeted and shown around and to our room. The room was different then we expected. The entire house is dated with narrow spaces and slanted walls. We did have a view of the water when the sun was out and not foggy.

We found the bed choices to be more modern and with comfortable mattresses. The clawfoot tub/shower combo was never a choice that worked for us but I'm sure some people like those kinds of bathrooms. The space seemed clean just dated. There are a lot of knick knacks sitting around in the entry area of the room but not in the bedroom area.

Our biggest issue was the noise of the place. The boat area next door started up at 3 a.m. Overall the windows, walls are thin. You can hear folks talking in other rooms or on other floors. When the door shuts downstairs it is easily heard and felt. We also noted the deck door was broken and wouldn't shut so this added to the noise level. We wish we had known about the location and noise.

My husband was disappointed that breakfast was not included. But although it looks like a bed and breakfast it is not, just an inn.

The inn would be a great getaway if you could remove the boat business next door. For our taste the inn is overcrowded with things sitting everywhere. We wouldn't stay here again just based on the noise and the cost. We felt it was too high for the condition of the place.

I could not add to great previous review. We traveled here in OCT 07...what a great place. We stayed in a second floor apartment. We found this much better than busy, touristy Bar Harbor...very quiet, quaint and picture perfect. Near tasty Thurston's Lobster Pound. Don't forget to try Cadillac Mountain Stout [---------]. We had a little kitchenette and cooked a few nights a week. You can bbq or lobster boil on the little beach in front. The only thing..it was spiderville central...they were everywhere on the exterior of the building. A little creeped out, but that is life in the woods of Maine and life was still very good.

I cannot find a review on Trip Advisor for this Inn but it must not be overlooked. Situated on the outskirts of Southwest Harbour this is the perfect place to relax and unwind. We could not believe the view from our bedroom window and private deck, we just went "wow". If you love views of the water filled with boats of all shapes and sizes you will love this. The backdrop is the magnificent Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain.

Even if you cannot secure a waterfront room you will not miss out. The grounds are grassed and run directly onto the beach. There are chairs and tables and it is all too easy just to sit down and watch the boating world go by. There is always movement out on the water even at dawn! There are barbecues so you can have a beach party and canoes so you can paddle out to inspect the beautiful boats at close quarters. (lifejackets are provided) and no extra charges. The staff we met were so friendly and pleasant we felt comfortable straight away. It is a family business.

The building is old and furnished with antiques in a charming way. It claims to be one of the oldest buildings on the island. There are a variety of rooms and prices and we paid $120 for a King double bedroom, sitting room and bathroom with fantastic views and private deck in mid August. The rooms were attractively decorated and clean. If you are looking for peace and quiet then this is for you.

Next door is the Mansell Boat Co where you can hire small sailing boats or motor boats by the day. We took one out with a skipper as we are not confident sailors and we had a fantastic few hours just sailing about in these safe waters.

A visit to this area is not complete without visiting Bar Harbour which is about 20mins away by car but we are very glad we were not staying there. It was just too busy and commercialised.

There is an adjacent restaurant and a bigger centre with shops and restaurants in Southwest Harbour within walking distance.

We cannot recommend this place highly enough and wish we could visit again.
