“No enchantmnent there”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Granted we were travelling on a Friday, in August, heading north and finding accommodation along the Maine Coast line for one night is not easy. Enchanted Nights B&B in Kittery, Maine, was promising when we booked there for a stiff US$ 175. Our hopes were high. We arrived later than expected due to heavy traffic in Connecticut. The owner whom we called was very helpful to direct us to the B&B in the dark. However the outside steps were not well lit and quite uneven, without a proper railing. We got to our room which was overstuffed with cushions and knickknacks, as the rest of the house. It felt like being in a flea market. The bed was high and ominous, over stuffed again. However it turned out to be comfortable enough. The bathroom might be considered quaint by some with the old bathtub in the middle of the room, but it was not easy to get into it for a shower and one had to be a bit careful with the sloped ceiling above the toilet. Towels were not in their prime. The biggest let down was the breakfast: a store bought muffin split in half, a dry omelet, despite the announcement of our host that it was done with “vegetarian eggs”, half a toast and coldish potatoes, no milk. The host had given us good suggestions for dinner late at night and pointed us in the right direction to drive along the seashore, but all in all we were less than enchanted. I strongly suggest giving this one a pass.

Recently, my family and I drove to Maine for six days. My parents chose to stay at Enchanted Nights because it was one of the only available pet-friendly places. Well, wasn't that a huge mistake. We stayed in the Cottage room, which had two bedrooms and a bathroom. Antiques cluttered every corner of the room. The rooms were dark and musty, and I was literally terrified of the place. I couldn't even sleep at night, because 1) i was scared to, and 2) the refrigerator made humming and gurgling noises all night. There were 10 mirrors in total, and it was only three small rooms! We didn't even consider taking off our shoes to walk on the linoleum or the old rugs on-top-of rugs. The sink was dirty and rusty, and so were the bed frames. At night, i even felt something in the bed pop or snap. Unnecessary curtains and sheets hung everywhere, the "french doors" separating two bedrooms were visibly old, and the place in general reminded me of a cave. From the outside, the house looked scary; and if i would have been living in Kittery, I would take every precaution to /avoid/ the place. There was a backyard where we were told we can let our dog out to run. However, it was so overgrown that we didn't even want to step in there. Looking through the windows, we saw clutter in almost every room. Enchanted Nights is more like hoarding cave than a B&B. I even felt bad about leaving our dog alone in there, even though he's used to it. The dining room wasn't that bad, but we only stayed for breakfast once, since I felt sick after eating it. The only positive thing about the place is that it's located not too far from Portsmouth, NH, a really wonderful town. Since my parents couldn't stand the conditions much longer, we decided to leave one night early. Although we gave Peter further notice about us leaving, we still had to pay the price of five nights. Overall, I would never recommend that anyone stay here.

Definitely not for the snobby nor the modern type! This B&B is quite and very friendly. The breakfast was very good and plentiful! The location is also quite interesting, It is a 15 minutes walk to Portsmouth old town and you can go for a scenic bike ride directly from the B&B, Paul is very resourceful.

I was tired of Bla- Bla hotels on our anniversary trip so I surprised my husband with a stay at Enchanted Nights. We really enjoyed our evening. Peter and Nancy were very nice and interesting to talk to. We enjoyed the eclectic ambiance. The place was clean, albeit cluttered with interesting antiques and nick-knacks, a feast for the eyes. We were served a good breakfast and coffee and enjoyed our visit with Peter. This is a unique old home with CHARACTER. A great place for the person who would appreciates the proprietor's creativity. This was a charming spot for an Enchanted rendezvous.

Room Tip: We chose the Princess room for the name and the price. It had a claw foot tub and a Beautiful chande...

On our recent trip to Maine, we found ourselves unable to find a room for the night and very excited to find that Enchanted Nights had a room available.

We were close by, so declined to confirm with a credit card - thank goodness! As we drove up (still delighted to have found a place to say), our first impression was that this was not a well maintained house and not a place we'd like to stay.

We were shown the room and were both overwhelmed by the clutter and apparent lack of cleanliness. Neither of us had a good feeling about the place and decided to move along and take our chances despite the late hour and slim prospects elsewhere.

We checked more reviews later on and felt that the bad reviews accurately reflected our impressions. We're thankful that we found somewhere else to stay, even though considerably more expensive.

The Enchanted Nights is not for the snobby or unenlightened. It is a fest for the eyes at every turn. Beautiful antiques and collectables, creative design making each room one of a kind, great attention to our needs(brought our dogs bowls and wine glasses for our evening drink outside), delicious breakfast and great coffee, and INTELLIGENT conversation.
We had the Cottage, a 2 room: small yet roomy charming and quaint. Perfect for our needs with our 2 dogs.
The saying " Don't judge a book by it's cover, or don't judge people by how they look" totally applies here. So there are weeds or overgrown grass, missing paint, or a non paved driveway these are not the reasons to evaluate a B&B, spending nights in a B & B is for the special touches that the chain hotels can't deliver.
If you love cookie cutter stay elsewhere! If YOU are out of the ordinary -stay in this out of the ordinary and special local.
Special thanks to Peter and Nancy

Room Tip: all rooms were unique, special and pretty -check the webs pictures and choose.

Please don't make the mistake I and my friends did — look beyond the quaint photos on the website and look more carefully at the 3.5 evaluation. Nearly as many people offered great reviews as terrible reviews...with all the terrible reviews taking place recently. Something happened to this once-charming B&B, possibly family illness/issue — whatever the cause, sadly, they should no longer be in business and the health department for the Town of Kittery is investigating. No to underpowered air conditioning, mildew, and a hording are some key words you won't see on their website, but should be.
