“Great Place to Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2010

Spent several nights at the Herbert while dayhiking in the area. It is a very quaint hotel. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. The rooms were quiet and the beds were very comfortable. The place is very clean - the only reason I rated it a 3 for cleanliness was that the jets for the whirlpool baths needed some attention (I'm a bit picky about things like that). Overall, the Herbert is a great place at a decent price. We will definately be staying at the Herbert whenever we are hiking in the area or snowboarding at Sugarloaf!

Having read the previous reviews, a point to consider is that reviews raising concern pre-date the current owners. Within the last year I have stayed at the Herbert Grand on two occasions and concur with the many whom have commented on the fine architecture and furnishings that afford the hotel its vintage appeal. However, what really sets the Herbert Grand apart is the service. Dawn Sova is very approachable, and a very knowledgeable host. Whatever the question may be, she'll find you the answer. She's personable with a great sense of humor and every bit rich with character as the hotel itself. If about your travels, meeting interesting people is an experience you value, then you would want to know that someone very special is managing the Herbert.

Ok, if you are looking for the fancy, luxury hotel with everything done to perfection: this is not the place for you. If you are looking for character, excellent service, and a great atmosphere: you've just found your dream place. The Herbert Grand is an older hotel with loads and loads of period details. Check the original, oldstyle barber shop downstairs! It has been taken over by new owners about 8 months ago who are dedicated to ensuring these period details remain and get restored where needed. Right now the bathrooms are a bit older, but they are on the list of upcoming renos. In the meantime: it all works.

When we arrived here, we unfortunately found our bathroom with somebody else's hairs left behind and a non-functioning whirlpool. When we mentioned this downstairs we were immediately upgraded to a different, larger room AND refunded for one of our nights! The people running this hotel clearly take pride in their business. Just to add: the new room was absolutely perfect - clean, comfortable and no faults to be found anywhere. The location not far from Sugarloaf is great, check their weekday ski specials!

Thank you does not come close to what I would extend to the new owners. You have done a wonderful job with this grand old girl and I will be back to experience the dining room and see all the projects completed.
My husband and I were travelling through and were getting very tired and needed a place to retire for the evening. As luck would have it we happened upon this wonderful inn with the most acceptional owners (and Mom). I have many disabilities and was sore and tired upon arriving, but this cosy oasis soon had me very relaxed. Although the dining room was not open yet, the wonderful little restaurant close to the inn was fabulous and overlooked the waterfalls (everything was home made and the salad dressings were incredible).
We have kept all the info we gathered from the hotel and show all our friends this beautiful inn and then further it with all of the history as told to us by the new inn keeper. It was truly one of the warmest places I have ever had the pleasure of staying at.
The rooms are not huge, but it kind of feels like your staying in grandmas house and its sufficient for the evening.
They were also kind enough to let our pom puppy stay with us (for an extra fee). They did mention they have had problems with people leaving for dinners or outings and leaving their pets barking in the rooms, a common problem we heard about in our two week tour..I honestly dont understand people that do this and it really ruins things for those of us that are responsible...
Please, if you are going to be in and around this area, plan to stay at least a night at this "Grand" old Inn, you will be so happy you did, it is a step back in time that in this day and age is so nice to have.
Congratulations on a job very well done, see you soon.

We were travelling though with another couple and reserved ahead not quite knowing what to expect. We were looking for a reasonably priced place, clean, with decent beds, and the 2 bedroom king fit the bill. The king bedroom is spacious and has a fireplace: the second bedroom has 2 twin beds. A solid door separates the rooms, so is private. This was great for us, and would also be ideal for a couple with 2 kids. The only negative was that whoever occupies the second bedroom has to walk through the first to get to the bathroom. We didn't mind since we're pretty good friends and have shared rooms before.
The hotel is unique, and really a slice of history, kind of a refreshing change from the chains. A night at a hotel museum? The lobby is spacious and welcoming, with a large fireplace. The owners, who I think are brave to have taken on a hotel of this size and vintage, seem to have plans for the place. The hotel needs some quality work done to it, and I hope that the original style is preserved. The bonus here was a great continental breakfast in the lobby.

my husband and i were sightseeing in maine to see the leaves and we found this place online. when we got there, it was absolutely charming with a lot of historic details. it's beautiful and had wifi which was awesome and not expected out there in the mountains.
i can't wait to go back and stay in another room - they all are different, and they keep the unrented room's door open so you can explore. very lovely place and a very nice owner/operator. i wish i would have taken photos of the lobby to put on here, it was gorgeous!
