“A relaxing time at the Nonantum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of July. It is one of the more accessibly priced options in Kennebunkport and I booked it for its family friendly vibe.

Room:
We stayed in the Portside rooms on the second floor and had a nice view of the river. As previous reviewers have noted, you can hear people walking around in the room above, but since we ourselves live in a pre-war home, it didn't bother us much at all. Our room was a good size, bright and clean. Bathroom is also clean enough but in dire need of an update and a little bit on the small side. Turndown service was offered, which was nice, but we declined as we had our little ones in the room, but the housekeepers offered us chocolate anyway! The beds were comfortable and we had a great rest the nights we were there.

Dining:
We had dinner at 95 Ocean our first night, and while the food was pretty good, it took one hour from ordering to get it. By that time, my 6 month old was in full melt-down mode and I couldn't enjoy it. I also managed to get quite a few mosquito bites while waiting. They also messed up our 2 year old's order but did quickly correct it. Given that the restaurant was not even close to full, I don't understand why it took an hour for our food to come out? I also did not appreciate having the staff clearing up the restaurant, sweeping the floor, etc while we were still eating our dinner, giving us the feeling like we were closing the place down, as if it was our choice to take a late reservation and wait so long for our food!

Breakfast was included in our rate, and it was great. Their baked goods and pancake selection varies every day, which was nice and the hot food served buffet style was great. Even with 15 minutes before breakfast was over, they would re-fill with fresh bacon, sausage, etc. The servers were all very polite and friendly and made us feel welcome.

Amenities:
We enjoyed the pool with our kids, and it was nice to see the staff trying to get some of the scheduled activities going (campfire sing-along, ice-cream making) but they were unfortunately poorly attended. If it werent for the fact that it was mostly raining while we were there, I imagine it would have been nice to sit out on the Adirondack chairs facing the river and relaxing, or kicking a ball around with the kids on their expansive lawn.

Overall, we had a really nice time, the property is charming and I think we we'll be back!

Hello Travel Bug:
It is terrific that you and your family had such a magnificent time at The Nonantum! You are correct! Sitting in an Adirondack while watching your kiddos kick a ball around is a spectacular way to spend an afternoon! And a campfire, songs and roasted marshmallows is the perfect end to a perfect day.
So glad to hear you think the property is charming and that you will be back! We will be looking for you!

Our second stay here has turned out to be even better than out first. What was warm, friendly hotel with individuals that make a point to ensure you are happy and charming rooms with lovely views and personal touches like hand painted pillows. A very picturesque setting the grounds and gardens are breath taking. The front desk, particularly Michael, did everything possible to accommodate our desires. The dining room buffet at breakfast was well maintained with good food and assorted adoption and dinner was terrific two nights we dined there. Mondays are a special lobster dinner that is an amazing value and prepared as good as any Maine lobster dinner you can imagine. Again the dining staff was friendly and warm. Elsie who runs the kids club and performed guitar songs around the fire is the best. Even though one night there was a wedding and another night a large bus tour dining, we never felt like we were 2nd fiddle, just the opposite in fact. Finally there's so much to do. It is very close to town for shopping and dining, close to he beach for swimming and fishing and they even have a river marina where you can board for a sailing trip or lobster boat ride. A clean pool on the property is the icing on he cake. I highly recommend you try Nonantum!

Hello Oyster Lover:
Your lovely write up is much appreciated here at The Nonantum Resort!
Your thoughts about Elsie in Activities are right on! Elsie loves children and each day I watch her playing with our littlest guests and ensuring that they are having the time of their lives! (when little people are happy, Mom and Dad are also happy!) Come Campfire time, Elsie is there with her guitar ready to lead everyone in their campfire song favorites! She is one talented girl!
Mike from the Front Desk also is an ace member of our staff. Mike only spoke French until age 6, so his abilty to jump back and forth between languages (a skill I am in awe of!) comes in very handy with some of our foreign guests. Mike also is a customer service wizard and he sets a great standard for some of our younger workers.
I think our Sunday Night Lobster Special is the best kept secret in town! $20.13 for a lobster, corn, mussels, and potato. How can you beat that?
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! We look forward to seeing you again soon!
All The Best,
Jean Ginn Marvin

My family and I just returned from atleast our 10th stay at the Nonantum (might be more I've lost count). We always go in July. I've stayed at a few hotels in Kennebunkport and this is the best, all around place. The location is perfect, a short easy walk into town and right on the water. It's very family friendly (we have had 2-3 kids with us each time). there are activities and a nice pool area, even a campfire for smores in the evening. We have always stayed in the newer (mid-1980s) Portside building, so I can only speak to those rooms -- nicely appointed and a decent size. Some updating to the bathroom would be nice, but certainly does not detract from our stay. The daily buffet breakfast has something for everyone. Finally the staff people from so friendly and helpful, from the front desk to wait staff to housekeeping. My family and I have not been thrilled with the dinners we've had at the onsite restaurant, but that might have been more bad luck than anything, I don't let that stop me from staying at the Nonantum year after year. I've already made my reservations for next July.

Room Tip: I’ve stayed on all 3 floors of Portside building. 1st floor porches, 2nd floor decks and 3rd floor...

Hi Trish:
Thank you so much for your continued patronage at The Nonantum Resort! We really appreciate our customers who come year after year (and there are a lot of you!) It is so fun for us to see your families growing up and hear about the years adventures!
It was great to learn that our winning combination of location, awesome staff, fantastic family programs and yummy breakfasts are exactly what our guests are looking for! It is what we would look for when traveling with our own families so it is wonderful to know from our repeat guests that we are on the right track!
Can't wait to see you again next year! Thanks again!

really friendly staff, lovely resort, beautiful setting, lots of activities planned, short walk to kennebunkport which is gorgeous, really cute. our downside was the Sleep quality, you could literally hear everything from the rooms on either side and above, not very appropriate for a family, but however overall it was Very good, turn down service and chocolates were great.

Hello Ceithleann:
Thanks for taking time to tell me about your visit! I am happy that the really friendly staff, lovely resort, beautiful setting, lots of activities planned, and short walk to kennebunkport were all big pluses in your book. I am so sorry you had a noise issue in your room. What we have learned is that some rooms are noisier than others and your neighbors seem to play a very large role in that! We do have white machines available and many folks find that can make the rambunctious 7 year old upstairs a lot less noticeable!
I hope you can come and see us again soon!
Warm Regards,

This really is a resort that focuses more on families. There are no adults only activities for anyone who doesn't desire to deal with other people's children. Food is mediocre and very pricey. The elevator in the older building needs a full time attendant. It isn't easy for everyone to go up 4 flights of stairs. Kennebunkport doesn't cater to visitors at all. The parking situation is atrocious. We gave up on going to a couple of places we really wanted to see. We had locals yell at us to get out of their area and go back to where the tourist belong. The best part of the time we spent there was the room and its gorgeous view, and a walk along the river's edge looking at the rocks, fauna, and local wild life.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a jacuzzi. It is more private and you get a great view of the water.

Hi Kate:
I am sorry you had a less than fantastic time at The Nonantum! It sounds like maybe the town of Kennebunkport did not put their respective best foot forward! How unfortunate some of the locals did not make you feel at home! My apologies!
I am surprised to read you thought we only had activities for children. In fact we have lots of adult activities including biking, guided walks, guided kayaking, yoga, guest appreciation receptions and cooking demos! For your convenience the Activities Schedule is listed on our website, and copies of the schedule are available in the lobby of both buildings as well as in every room. It is so too bad you didn't know about it as it sounds like you would have enjoyed a guided walk, kayak or bike ride!
Hopefully you can come back again and try some adult activities!
Thanks for taking time to write!

The Nonantum never ceases to amaze us. We have been coming here for many years and each year we love it even more. The staff is amazing, the food delicious, the rooms are clean and bright, the whole atmosphere is fabulous. The children's activities are a wonderful way for the children to have some time to do what they love to do also. Each year that we come back we bring more family with us and they love it as much as we do.

Hi Debbie!
It was fantastic to see your beautiful family back here yet again! We so appreciate that you continue to come and visit us again and again! It is great to hear your kids had a good time in our Activities Program. Barbara and her team do an outstanding job coming up with different things for "kids" of all ages! New this year is yoga on the lawn and yoga in the pool! Fun stuff!
We hope you can come back this fall and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage season.
Can't wait to see you soon!

Following, for us, our rather disappointing stay in Belfast, we decided to spoil ourselves and stay one night en route to Boston at the Nonatum. We were not disappointed. It is a lovely hotel (not sure about the “resort” bit!), right on the waterway, and the staff could not have been nicer bearing in mind that we booked it only the previous night. A big “thank you” to Sheila who took pity on us and gave us a wonderful room overlooking the water. Also the guys handling luggage are terrific. Our room was large and so comfortable that frankly I could have stayed all week. Everything was so clean – could not find fault with anything.

It’s about a 15min. walk into Kennebunkport itself; we didn’t go there for an evening meal as it was raining and to be honest we’d had enough of getting wet in Belfast. If you turn right outside the hotel, a 5 min. walk or thereabouts will take you a small lobster restaurant and a couple of hotels facing onto the beach. Because of the rain we ate at the Nonatum which I must admit wasn’t that great, mainly because the restaurant was quite empty so no “atmosphere”. There is a small bar there which closes at 11pm but you can sit and enjoy your drinks after closing without any worries.

Breakfast was good – lots of choices – certainly enough to suit everyone.

Would I stay here again? A definitely “yes”. We both wished we had stayed here longer and not in Belfast.

Room Tip: Spoil yourselves and get a water view

Hello 007
So glad you had an enjoyable time here at The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport! Even in the rain the grounds are beautiful and many a guest has shared with me that like you, they would have loved to stay longer!
We do have a great location along the waterfront and just a short walk to town. Breakfasts are always a hit and our rule that "Cleanliness Is Everybody's Job" insures that everything is always spotless around here!
I know you live far away but we hope your travels will allow you to come back to beautiful Kennebunkport!
