The good news:
- Fabulous location, surroundings and atmosphere.
- Well-appointed, adorable cottages.
The not-so-good news:
Am I the only one who found the innkeeper's behavior (to put it mildly) offputting? After an 8-hour drive on I-95, we were greeted on arrival with "Oh, our last guests have arrived -- now we can go home!" Followed by, "Now you must select where you are going for dinner!" Are you kidding me? I've never been to this town, I'm absolutely exhausted, and I have to pick out where I'm having dinner IMMEDIATELY, before I've even had a chance to sit down or unpack the car? Huh?
And a warning: don't be 10 minutes late for breakfast. You'll be greeted with "Ah, the latecomers!", and then "Late arrival!" will be shouted repeatedly across the entire dining room. The final straw was, after returning home from my trip, I found that this same person had signed me up for a B&B mailing and e-mail list, without my permission (isn't that illegal in some states?) I guess you could say I had a bit of a personality conflict with the one of the owners (a hazard of staying in a B&B, I suppose!) :-)
Other than that, I would highly recommend this inn.

As owners of the Maine Stay Inn, we find this review highly upsetting. We vividly remember this guest's arrival, which was very late at night - later than we advertise that we staff the office. We were worried about them, as they hadn't notified us that they were to arrive late, and decided to stay around to make sure they got here safely. We thoroughly enjoy greeting our guests personally and feel best about their arrival when we can provide information about the community. Our day begins well before 7am and by 9:30pm were ready for bed. As a result, our comment about their late arrival was meant to be lighthearted and was said with great relief. We were indeed anxious to get their dinner plans solidified because the restaurants in town were about to close. We knew they were hungry and wanted to ensure that they got dinner! Sure, they could have told us they would have preferred to unpack and relax, but at after 9:30 in the evening, we couldn't then guarantee that they would find a place to get dinner.

Furthermore, we would never add guests to a mailing list they did not wish to be on. When they give an email during registration we tell them they will receive an e-mail confirming their reservation and periodic newsletters from the Maine Stay. They can stop receiving these newsletters at any point. Occasionally guests traveling throughout New England will choose to join the "Passport to New England" group, and will receive emails and brochures from participating inns. These guests will only receive emails if they specifically ask to be placed on this list.
It is now clear to us that this guest didn't appreciate our personal attention and customer service that comes with being a guest at the Maine Stay Inn, and perhaps he would have preferred staying in a large hotel with 24-hour concierge, continental buffet breakfast, and without personalities to enjoy or conflict with.
