We had tried Abbondante when it first opened and didn't have a great experience, so we decided to try it again a year later. Oops. We only ended up there because every other restaurant had a long wait on this holiday weekend Saturday night. They had plenty of seating--first clue. The atmosphere in the restaurant is still great--though the mix of quotes on the wall from world figures and locals seemed a bit self-indulgent. A few constructive observations: when you walk in the front door, you have to dodge the busy wait staff as they move back and forth right in the way of patrons trying to get to the front desk--very odd layout. Restaurant was too dark to read the menus--several diners using cell phone lights to read the menu. We had a new waiter who was friendly and really tried hard, but it was clear he needed more training. His manager would team up with him at our table, but the more experienced guy wasn't that friendly or helpful. Appetizers were tasty but not enough dressing on mixed greens salad. But things went downhill from there. There were four of us--and the entrees were served at separate times. Chicken parmesan was served in skillet that was way too hot. Rubbery and off-putting taste. Angel hair pasta was extra dry. Orecchiette Sausage, Broccoli, Garlic was served to one diner who immediately asked for parmesan cheese. Never arrived--waiter completely forgot and manager never came back to see how we were doing. The server, to his credit, did take off the inedible entrees off the bill which was classy and much appreciated. Strike two for us--we really want to like this place and the building is terrific but they still don't seem to have it together for service and food that's worth the wait and the price.
