After spending an entire month in a really nice cabin in Island Falls, I had read about this restaurant from some of the other guest of the cabin (they had a guest book that previous guests had written in). So one night a friend and I decided to give it a try.
When we entered the restaurant, we were immediately approached by the hostess. She asked if we had reservations. We told her no and asked if we needed them. She said that it might be able to get us in, but she needed to go check first and that reservations were recommended. There were only 2 other customers in the restaurant when we arrived at around 5:30 PM. It is also a fairly small restaurant, so I can see why reservations are recommended.
She came back after a few minutes and told us she could work us in. She seated us at a table and said our server would be with us in a moment. Well, that moment turned into about 10 minutes. My dinner guest and I were both thirsty from the ride over on the ATVs, so getting a drink was of first priority. Needless to say, the server did finally come and finally we got our drinks. Before taking our orders, she read off this incredibly long list of specials being served that evening, explaining what each was as she recited them. One caught my attention - the pasta with oleo and anchovies. Being a real lover of anchovies, I got this for my entree. My friend also got one of the specials, a coffee/brown sugar rubbed NY Strip steak, which turned out to be very delicious. However, I can't say the same about my entree.
The pasta was definitely not al dente. It was much closer to a bowl of mush with margarine and a tiny speck or two of anchovy. I asked if I could get more anchovy and the server replied that it would cost $4.99 for more. I thought that was a bit too expensive for anchovy, so I declined the offer.
After the entree, she offered us dessert. While it sounded tempting, I was not interested in trying another 'special'.
My advice is to skip this restaurant if in Houlton. There is a much better restaurant in downtown called The Vault. I've been there several times now and never been disappointed. Fantastic escargot appetizer!
