“A Real Puzzle????”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2010

The suite and its view were FABULOUS....but the Host was a puzzle. After friendly emails prior to arrival....his lack of hospitality for the 1st 3 days was puzzling. We don't require much..but a friendly "hello" as we arrived and at breakfast would have been nice. After all...running a B & B seems to almost require Some Hospitality??? But...when we left (a day early) he was helpful and conversational about our return trip down the Maine coast. The "Carmudgeon" had gone. However...we shan't return...as we wouldn't know which Host would be there. Sadly....as the accommodation we had and the location quite near the ocean were lovely.

The Man-Friend and I hit the road on a hot, breezy Saturday and made our way up 95 from Boston to Freeport, Maine for a little LL Bean, and a little chillaxing. Maine is so pretty, and Freeport was hardly crowded June 19, probably because the full summer crowd wasn't in the state yet, and it was also such a beautiful day, anyone with no shopping addiction was at the beach.

Anyway, after the LL Bean visit and commerce success (MF got himself some snappy old school bluchers - pronounced with a soft CH like 'Charo', no 'K' sound - we asked at Bean's) , we wound our way up some back roads, passing through Bowdoin College (pretty, but I'd shoot myself in the dead of winter), and ending up at the B&B the Harspwell Inn. We checked in which was basically talking to Richard, the proprieter about when breakfast was served and where the homemade chocolate chip cookies for the guests were (right next to the fridge with the free drinks) and we made our way back to the Eagle's Nest, a suite behind the main building.

So pretty, cozy, well decorated, and spacious. We turned the ceiling fans on as there was no A/C that we could see, and opened the windows to get the fresh air moving through. Took a nap, comfy bed, lots of creaks and sounds in the suite, but don't be scared. The fridge in the kitchenette downstairs didn't seem to be turned on, and I couldn't figure out how to turn it on, so if you stay there and have anything you want to keep cold, ask about that. Also, be forewarned: there's something strange that happens in terms of smell when you run the shower - a sulfuric, rotten-egg smell is emitted. Apparently there is nothing wrong with the water, but it needs to be run on hot for a while before it goes away. Didn't deter us from showering, but it was a bit disconcerting.

The location is great - beautiful views of the ocean, and you feel like you are really far away because it is so quiet and not touristy at all. We went to dinner at Estes Lobster House at the tip of the Harpswell side of the peninsula and that was great. Fried clams, scallops, steamed lobster - the whole she-bang. Yummy.

Now the day was hot - like close to 90, breezy and not humid - but because we were in Maine, we took our sweatshirts to dinner and we needed them after. Ahhh, the night was cool. Good sleeping weather, but very quiet and if you are not used to it, you can hear every creek and crack of house settling and branches breaking.

Breakfast was nice - Texas french toast (thick bread) and a blueberry turnover - YUM. We 'checked out' - handed the key to Richard, and hit the road. It was a lovely evening. Totally recommend the place if you want to chill out, be cozy, and get 'away from it all'. It was lovely.

We went to the Giant's Stairs on Baily Island on the eastern part of the peninsula at the recommendation of a friend, and that was quite the photo opportunity. Definitely explore it - beautiful views of the ocean, craggy cliff rocks to walk on - make sure you have the right shoes on - and apparently, there's poison ivy there as well. So, if you are able to get P.I. be careful. I can't for some reason, but hey, i still watched out.

Anyway, there are Puffin Tours up at Pemaquid Point (1/2 our north maybe?) and we learned this from our breakfast buddies, some lively fun women who told us they went on a $25 cruise to see the Puffins. BUT - be warned - Puffins are apparently TINY! Everyone thinks they are bigger than they are, and apparently when they see them, they are like "what? that's it? they are soooo small!" And they are apprently very fast as well - so slow shutter speeds on your camera won't capture them as they fly away in a flash. Anyway, next time we go, may need to do that. 2 1/2 hour cruise for $25 is a pretty decent price. And to see a Puffin? Priceless. :-)

Had a horrrible experience , the breakfast was nothing to write home about, and the rooms were uncomfortable, would never go back, the owner was grumpy and rude.

We took a little babymoon on the coast of maine. I am extremely pleased with our choice of the harpswell inn. We stayed in the regal "captains quarters." fabulous room, water views, a bed to die for. Loved the inn keepers... from the homemade (nothing i could make at home!) breakfasts, to the restaurant and activity suggestions, to their sweet dogs, to the gratis cookie jar. We had surprisingly warm weather for maine in april and this idyllic setting was just amazing for relaxing and basking in the peace and quiet. We will definitely be returning...next time with a lil baby!

Stayed two nights in this great inn. We were visiting a friend in Brunswick and due to Bowdoin homecoming weekend all the local inns were full. Lucky us that we found this inn only about a 15 minute drive away. Very friendly innkeepers, delicious breakfast and great area to explore. Really incredible views from both the inn and nearby. Great wine shop on the island too. Soooo glad we discovered Harpswell!
