“Good Value and Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2006

Located right on US 1 (look for the large Indian statue on same side of hotel), very clean, pillows felt like sleeping on a cloud, quiet with no banging of doors. Adequate free continental breakfast and comparing rooms to rest of the area, these are very reasonable. Staff was very friendly. Only negative is front door and lobby close at 10:00 pm and you then have to go around to back of hotel to a door which remains open 24 hrs. a day and leads to rooms. Not good security but then again, maybe there is no crime in that area?

The Casco Bay Inn is a clean, simple motel. It's about a mile or two from the outlet shops in Freeport. There was free internet at a computer in the lobby, but the supposed wireless I could never manage to connect to with my laptop. The place is quiet and clean. It's supposedly a 3 Diamond AAA hotel, but I wouldn't consider it that good.

One major problem was that the night we stayed there, we got back to the hotel at 10pm. The front door was locked and the lobby was dark. I had no idea how to get inside. I then saw that there was a sign saying "business hours" ended at 10pm. First of all, the idea of a hotel, even a simple one, closing for the night is unheard of. Secondly, the front desk never told us about this policy.

We called the emergency after hours phone number listed on the door several times, but no one ever picked up. Eventually we figured out that if you go around back, you can enter the hotel that way after hours. That door, although it is hidden from view of passers by, is not secure and leads directly to guest rooms. Anyone could enter the guest room area and there is no hotel staff around in case of a problem. It's ridiculous enough that the hotel "closes" at night, but the fact that you can't even contact the management in case of emergency or the fact that there is an unsecured door leading directly to guest rooms is unacceptable.

Also, you have to pay your bill when you check in -- not when you check out, as with many hotels.
