“2 night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

This hotel was fine for a two day stay. It catered for a range of visitors including families with youg children as well as couples.Rooms were large, clean and basic with tea and coffee facilities. We were allocated a ground floor room at the back that had a patio door straight to our parking bay.Unfortunately the weather was atrocious but the young families made the most of the indoor pool.Breakfast was basic - coffee, cereal and muffins but plenty of it. Well situated for the National Park and Bar Harbour. There were two restaurants in walking distance from the hotel both Chinese, one linked to the hotel the other 300 yards further down the road, walking distance but no clear sidewalk. Other than chinese a car is needed. The hotel is on a one way system so the first manouevre anywhere is to turn right.
Good value.

The front desk staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The rooms are very spacious and since we were on a motorcycle appreciated getting a room on first floor with a patio door entrance to be able to keep an eye on the bike. The front staff even found us a microwave to use in the room which was very much appreciated.

This is a pet friendly hotel, that had friendly staff with good attitudes. The rates were a descent price. I will recommend this place and look forward to returning next year with our dogs. Clean and affordable!!!

The Acadia Park area is very busy and the hotels seemed to be quite expensive. Colonial Inn asked for reviews, but it should not be one of your choices because:
*the bed was horrible-sheets did not stay put on bed and it was very noisy when you moved around in the bed. Sheets did not seem to fit the bed and not quite sure they were clean
*room did not seem to be clean
*there was an indoor pool, but no towels for it and staff at front desk did not seem to care to try to find some for us
*coffee pot did not work-take it out. Same for Eurobath dispenser that did not work
*there were 2 kleenex in the box-wouldn't the staff check to be sure there were enough kleenex
*"continental breakfast" was horrible-it was on the porch and just thrown out there so they could say there was a breakfast
* hard to get to this hotel because the street is one-way in front of it
*no one asked when we checked out, "was everything ok?" If they had, we would have told them, but by posting a review, which they asked for, others will now know to not choose this place.

When looking for a place to stay when visiting Acadia National Park we were not sure what area to stay in. Most people recommended to stay in Bar Harbor but I wasn't finding much that was under $200 a night on the big booking sites so I looked a little further out and came across the Colonial Inn in Ellsworth, I was concerned by the mixed reviews but took a chance and booked it.When we arrived we found an older hotel that could use some updating but our room was clean and the bed was fairly comfortable. You can see that the hotel hasn't had any major renovations in many years, the fact that it still had an older style tube TV did not bother me but might bother some people. The location is a little further from the park than I would recommend if you only have one day to see Acadia, it is about a 30 minute drive to the park but it is a straight shot. Being a little further out gave us the convenience of having places (wal-mart, and grocery stores) to pick up supplies and not pay the tourist shop prices that you find closer to the park. The free breakfast was pretty basic donuts, juice, oatmeal and coffee but it was free so I wouldn't complain. One of our favorite parts of the hotel was the indoor pool and hot tub, after a day hiking in Acadia a hot soak in the Jacuzzi was a welcome end to the day. Overall I would stay here again.

My family and I stayed in the 2-room family suite that accomodated 4 adults and 2 children. Room was quiet and clean, but with a slight musty/old smell. Grandchild enjoyed the hot tub and pool. Small kitchen was great and continental breakfast was adequate. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Stayed in Room 214; non-smoking family suite with 2 rooms and 3 beds.

We bought two rooms for 4 nights on Hotwire.com. After that I read the comments on TripAdvisor.com and was scared by many negative comments there. But since I already paid for the rooms, we went there anyway. Turns out it's much better than we expected. The front desk receptionist (Gina) was very helpful and adjusted the rooms as we needed. The hotel is a little old, but the rooms are big and beds are comfortable. The bathrooms and showers were clean. The air conditioner in one room was older than that in another and cooled down the room slower but it did work. Our rooms were on first floor and had a sliding glass door open right to our car so it's very convenient for loading/unloading. It's about half an hour driving to Bar Harbor and Acadia and considering the hotel price it's absolutely worth it. They also provide free breakfast and while it's simple it saved us lots of time. And the free WiFi is very convenient and we were able to connect our two iPads and two iPhones simultaneously, unlike in some resort one device a time. The large and clean pool and the powerful whirlpool are definitely a plus, except that the hours is a little strange, 9am to 9pm. We were able to return to the hotel early enough only once to use the pool.

Something they should but didn't provide: hair dryer and microwave. We borrowed a hair dryer from them and returned it when we checked out. But the missing of microwave proves to be more inconvenient. I'd suggest they provide one or two in the lobby if they can't provide it for every room.

Overall, the hotel is not the best we've ever stayed in but it's worth every dollar we paid for and definitely meet and surpass in some areas the standard of a two-star hotel.
