We come here often but decided to forgo the usual seafood plates for a shared 16 oz. Mate's Cut of prime rib, because we were in the mood and it was on the specials board. We began with tossed salad - iceberg lettuce, two slices of tomato, two slices of cucumber and a slice of red onion (Rate: ordinary, fresh, a good start). My husband had a bowl of thick rich Fish Chowder. (Rate: excellent) I had a bowl of French Onion soup from the Specials list (Rate A-: It was loaded with onions, very tasty, great cheese crust but the croutons were more than just a little stale -- they tasted old). Then the Prime Rib. It was the 16 oz. cut (as opposed to the 20 oz. Captain's cut). It was about 1/3 grissle and fat. A little fat is good, but this was excessive. The meat was chewy and tough. We asked for new knives thinking it was the fault of dull knives, but it wasn't. The waitress suggested it might have been more tender in au jus "juice" but none was offered, forthcoming or possibly even available. Our waitress did offer to take the meat back but we had almost finished our meal. With the prime rib came a Twice Baked Potato which was excellent, and a loaf of warm, fresh-baked white bread -- also, excellent. As we left we blamed ourselves for expecting superior beef in a locally lauded seafood restaurant.
