“a great off-season trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

This was my first trip downeast, but I was eager to get to Cherryfield for a bit of family genealogy research. When I mentioned this to Peter, he reached out to the head of the historical society in town on my behalf and arranged a meeting for us.

My husband, 5 y/o son, and I enjoyed the two rooms in the main house, which afforded us both privacy and plenty of room. The breakfasts our two mornings were quite tasty and even given thumbs up by our son.

There was a heavy snowfall our first night, and the drive was plowed quickly and we explored the area. Due to the snowfall, our tour was mostly car based, but we were fortunate to be able to experience Acadia with very little traffic. During our drive around Schoodic Point we only encountered two other cars! We're looking forward to making another trip to Cherryfield "in season".

We headed downeast on a winter weekend and found the Englishman's B and B in Cherryfield online. What a find. We had a cute little carriage house looking out on the partly frozen Narraguagus river. HIked along the river Trail and heard squawking that turned out to be a bald eagle couple who posed in a tree for us. The Carriage house had three windows looking over the river and everything you could want including robes and slippers. The Inn has two more rooms inside the main house which dates back to the 1780s and is on the national register. Breakfast in the Keeping room with its huge old cooking/baking fireplace. Great breakfast, free internet, and delightful hosts... yes he really does seem to be English. Oh year... it was inexpensive.

Room Tip: Get the carriage house if you can.

Many thanks for your review. We are glad you had a good trip and enjoyed meeting you. Even more snow now as we just had 15 inches and the forecast is for another 6-9 inches! Best time for the eagles, ospreys etc., is mid to late May, so glad you were able to see them - Peter and Kathy

We wanted to visit our daughter in Cherryfield for Christmas. Weather was not good so we postponed our trip for a few days til things settled down having active updates from Peter. We arrived Christmas day & Peter & Kathy were extremely gracious. Snow & ice were about but cleared frequently. We stayed in the cottage & it was very very cozy warm with fantastic picture views of the snowy river. Breakfasts amazing. A Winter retreat we enjoyed and will always have fond memories!!

Room Tip: Carrage house is our favorite but other rooms are equally as nice.

This is not only a lovely building in a beautiful setting beside the Narraguagus River, but Englishman's Bed and Breakfast is owned and run by as delightful a couple as you will ever meet.
Peter, the Englishman, and his wife Cathy are trained archaeologists who turned in their trowels in order to become innkeepers. Additionally, they sell bulk tea and serve excellent breakfasts.
Our room was exquisite, the other guests we met engaging and friendly, and our hosts erudite and cheerful.
If you are unfamiliar with the many beautiful and intriguing sights and places of natural beauty in the Downeast region of Maine, Peter and Cathy will be more than happy to acquaint you with them, and they can point you, as they did us, to many excellent restaurants. We look forward to another trip to this most compelling B&B.

We have been coming to this B & B for 5 years plus. The breakfasts are the best any where we have traveled in the world. The accommodations are excellent. We have stayed in 2 of the 3 rooms and loved them both. Top notch Internet reception. Grounds are engaging for nature lovers with the nearby river. Kathy & Peter have put there heart and soul into this B & B, and their guests, and it shows.

We'd planned a seventeen-day Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and New Brunswick driving trip, and wanted to make the noon ferry from St.John to Digby. We felt Cherryfield, Maine was an appropriate distance, but we forgot the one-hour time change. Peter Winham reminded us, offered an early (6:30AM) breakfast and conversation. Although we stayed in B&B's (six in all) on the rest of the trip, this was by far the best. The house is architecturally significant, the room in which we stayed perfect, breakfast terrific and Cherryfield an endearing small river town that bills itself "The Blueberry Capital of the World". Peter and Kathy are wonderful hosts; and we'll likely be back again.

We have already made our next reservations.
Our attractive and very comfortable suite was in the Carriage House adjacent to the wonderful 1793 Federalist style house, and the suite was superb. Breakfasts in the main house were five star quality every morning.
Peter and Kathy Winham, host and hostess, welcome guests like best friends. Listen to their advice on places to go and people to meet; they know the Down East, and are great conversationalists.
The inn is situated on the Narraguagus River and is the perfect home base for any Down East trip. Peter & Kathy provided us with a folder full of maps and descriptions fitting our interests. The spacious room was perfect for relaxing, working and sleeping, quiet with a very comfortable bed.
Go to the Englishman's Bed and Breakfast only if you appreciate the BEST, and are a FIVE STAR guest. We only want to share this wonderful inn with folks that will appreciate a rare experience.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house, we always want the Carriage House for ourselves.
