It is sad that I can't give this hotel more than 3 stars because it is located at such a breathtakingly beautiful location and there is just so much potential but all that is wasted due to their sloppy housekeeping and dated rooms. We stayed for 2 nights in a 2-bedroom cottage during a long road trip up north.
First, the positives…. the "Inn by the Sea" is located in a beautiful location. It is on a quiet stretch of road and yet only less than 10 miles from downtown Portland so you can get away from it all and yet be close to many nice restaurants in Portland in case you are in a mood for some variety. The grounds of the Inn were very well kept. Lots of lawn, pretty flowers and a fantastic beach that is a 5-minute walk from the Inn. We saw quite a few beautiful Monarch butterflies on the grounds, which makes the whole place even more beautiful. We tried the breakfast and Lunch at their restaurant (Sea Glass) and were very impressed with both the quality and the selection of food. I saw several vegetarian options and at least one vegan option on the lunch menu, which was very nice since one of the members in our family was vegetarian. All the food was delicious and well presented and our servers were very professional and knowledgeable.Oh and by the way, the ocean views from the restaurant and the grounds are gorgeous.
Now comes the bad part. We checked in late at night and found disgusting (blood)stains on our comforter. In all the hotels that I have stayed in over the years,I can't remember a time when I found dirty comforters in any hotel that claims to be a Luxury Hotel. The next day, before we left the room for sightseeing, I called the room service to explain the issue and was shocked that no one bothered to apologize and instead someone told me that the comforters would be changed. This is bad enough but sadly, it gets worse. We left a note on the bed and clearly marked the spot where the comforter had stains and a few minutes later, someone called me as I was driving and lo and behold, it was the house-keeping at the "Inn by the Sea" … they wanted to know which of the 2 bedrooms in our cottage had the dirty comforter(!!!!)…it was clear to me that no one had bothered to go into the room to resolve the issue before calling and disturbing me or they would have seen my note. It just made an already unpleasant experience much worse.
Several other misses (these are really basic things that any respectable hotel should never screw up). The bathroom was not the cleanest and had mold in the corners. We had a coffee machine in the room but no one bothered to replace the coffee, cream or sugar the next day during housekeeping. There was no "Privacy" sign you could put outside the room. The bathroom had nice amenities but lacked basic things like a soap dish in the sink and as a result, the soap kept sliding off and falling down. Finally, they dropped off a bill on the last day with no instructions on how to do the express checkout. When I did call the front desk to confirm the checkout, no one bothered to ask me about my stay and if it had been comfortable.
To end, I would just say that the hotel is situated in a beautiful location and has a great restaurant but it also has some very serious issues with the cleanliness of the rooms and sloppy house-keeping that need to be addressed immediately because they spoil the overall experience for the guests. I don't think that the high price of the rooms is currently justified.

Dear Bohemianguy2001: Thank you for selecting Inn by the Sea during your recent visit to southern Maine. I appreciate your patronage as well as the time you took to provide your feedback. While I am glad to learn that there were many elements of your visit that met and exceeded your expectations, I am very disappointed that they were tainted by negative housekeeping experiences. The property has been in the process of a phased renovation over the past several year beginning with the main Inn and this year completing one set of cottage accommodations, the 600-building. The accommodations in which you stayed I agree are in need of updating and while we do try to reflect the distinction online and through our pricing strategy, I appreciate that the differences can be difficult to capture. I further understand that there is a significant difference between issues related to age and those related to cleanliness and your observations related to the latter are certainly inconsistent with the level of service that we strive to provide. You may be assured that your comments have been shared with the appropriate parties so that we may continue to improve the experience for all guests. I am also very happy to speak with you directly regarding your experience at any time. I sincerely hope to have an opportunity to regain your confidence in Inn by the Sea and encourage you to contact me directly to secure a future stay so that I may personally ensure your experience exceeds your expectations. Kind regards, Sara Masterson
