For the past four years, my wife and I have been guests at the Hawthorn Inn in Camden, Maine. Camden is a gorgeous little gem of a New England town offering everything one would want in a quaint, yet vibrant, town. But Camden gets extra charm from having a lovely bed and breakfast in the Hawthorn Inn. Maryanne Shanahan, the proprietor of this fine establishment, has created a lovely setting that allows guests to enjoy her hospitality according to their individual wishes. Want to mingle? There's plenty of common space to meet and get to know your fellow travelers. Want privacy? The rooms are amply appointed to permit leisurely relaxation in spacious comfort. Need to work? There's a wireless Internet network that permits you to connect with your colleagues in ways that will never hint at the wonderful breakfast you've just enjoyed!

If you're interested in staying at a comfortable, beautiful inn, hosted by a wonderfully attentive innkeeper, consider the Hawthorn. The experience is, as they say in that tire guide, worth a journey!

I'm a regular. The hosts are charming, the breakfasts creative and scrumptious, and the town is a delight.

The home is quite close to downtown (5 minutes if you're walking slowly). Nicely appointed rooms, spacious living room, and coffee waiting for you in the morning.

I recommend it highly.

“The Hawthorn is the BEST!”

Hawthorn Inn Bed and Breakfast

I just got back from a weekend conference in Camden, where I stayed at the Hawthorn for the 6th or 7th time. There is a group of conference attendees who stay there every year and we guard our precious reservations for one of Maryann's rooms! That is because she is the most wonderful host and the greatest cook. We all go home talking about her amazing breakfasts. She uses fresh, local and organic ingredients when available and her compotes and blini with smoked fish and rosemary and goat cheese frittatas and well, I could go on! The house is beautiful, with a lovely backyard, and the rooms are themed. I stay in the lovely Rose Room which overlooks the back of the house, but rooms on the front have a view of Mount Battie. Maryann truly makes everyone feel like family.

“Really full service inn!”

Hawthorn Inn Bed and Breakfast

This is my fourth year returning to the Hawthorn Inn. I'm part of a small group that attends the PopTech conference each year in Camden, Maine. Do I come to Maine for the conference or for seeing my "same time next year" friends at the Hawthorn? I have to admit that it's some of both. Maryanne, the innkeeper, always makes us feel like we're returning home when we arrive at the inn; our wonderfully comfortable room is waiting for us; and at breakfast time we each look forward to the day's gourmet breakfast.

This year I had an unusual experience. On the first day of the 3-day conference, while crossing the street in downtown Camden, I stepped into a small pothole, and the next thing I knew I was down on the ground. Later that afternoon, I visited the ER and discovered that I had a severe sprain (but no broken bones!) and needed rest, icing, a splint, and leg elevation for the next 72 hours. It's not fun having this happen to you when you were looking forward to a vacation-like stay in Camden. When I returned to the inn later that afternoon, Maryann went into action! She got me situated in my room, brought me ice packs every few hours, made sure that my leg was elevated, and brought me "dinner in bed". I was served breakfast, lunch, and dinner until the third day when I felt strong enough to venture outside. Maryann went way beyond what was required. And although I wanted most to be home, she made me feel as comfortable as possible in the inn.

I don't typically write reviews online but the service was so extraordinary on this unusual trip of mine that I felt it was important to describe the kind of service you can receive at the Hawthorn. My recommendation is to visit Camden, stay at the Hawthorn, and avoid potholes! You'll have an amazing time and enjoy the comforts, food, and service of a beautiful home and all-giving innkeeper and staff.

“Delightful first stay at the Hawthorn Inn in Camden”

Hawthorn Inn Bed and Breakfast

I recently visited Camden for the first time in a decade and based on a friend's recommendation stayed at the Hawthorn Inn. Maryanne, the innkeeper, is gracious, knowledgable about the area, and very helpful with recommendations and reservations The Inn is lovely, comfortable and impeccably kept. It is perfectly situated to enjoy both the town and the harbor.
About half of the guests in the Inn the night I stayed there were repeat visitors to the Hawthorn, and I think that all of us are looking forward to our next visit.
