“Beautiful and Comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2008

The Greystone may be the best kept secret in Calais. This B&B is gorgeous, immaculate, and beautifully appointed. Our hosts Candace and Allan are warm, friendly people, willing to assist in any way. We stayed three nights while visiting relatives but this is an inn we would love to visit again just for the pleasure.
Breakfasts were nicely presented and delicious--especially the baked apple pancake. We highly recommend the Greystone.

The Graystone has three guest rooms, two of which are lovely suites, the other is smaller and shares a bath. The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable and the accommodations pleasant. The innkeepers are gracious, friendly and very helpful. Breakfasts vary from savory to sweet, with souffle's and french toast both topping my favorites list. I travel to Calais frequently and this is by far the best accommodations in town. The Graystone is better than the other lodging by orders of magnitude. My staff and I consider the Graystone to be the ONLY place to stay in Calais.

  • Liked — It is a wonderful way to pamper yourself. The house is gorgeous and in great shape.
  • Disliked — There are stairs to the guest rooms.

On a family research trip to the St. Croix River Valley and Canadian Maritimes, my hustband and I stayed at the Greystone Bed and Breakfast in Calais, Maine for 7 nights. Candace and Allan Dwelley (Greystone Proprietors) made us feel like members of their family; so much so we felt sad to leave at the end of the stay. The spacious home (circa 1840) was immaculate and so well decorated with period furnishings that it created a wonderful historical backdrop to our family research. Candy's breakfasts' were very good and a perfect beginning to the day. We highly recommend the Greystone as a wonderful place to stay as you visit this historic area of Maine and New Brunswick Canada.

My traveling companion and I chose the Greystone, partly because of reviews found on Travel Advisors. It was a great choice! Candy and Alan are so helpful, and down to earth, they have created a warm and inviting atmosphere in their lovely home. Our rooms were upstairs with a shared bathroom, comfortable beds, plenty of space. Satellite TV in one room, and WIFI available. Candy's breakfasts were wonderful! We were there for 3 nights, so got to sample those wonderful blueberry pancakes, as well as some other treats.

Candy suggested we visit Kingsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews, NB, and it was lovely. We had afternoon tea at the restaurant, which was delicious. If you go to the gardens, be sure to visit the restaurant.

Note that, for some reason, my cell phone was picking up Canadian time in Calais, which is 1 hour ahead of our time, and I had some confusion when I tried to use my cell phone for an alarm clock. Also got strange messages when I tried to call home. Use the alarm clock they provide, if your cell is doing the same.
Their B&B is just more than a stone's throw from the bridge going into Canada, which is nice. Expect the rules to change in regards to crossing the border after Jan. 1, 2008, so be sure you know what you need, before you go.

Greystone is a lovely B&B. Our room was large, well-appointed, and comfortable. Our friends felt the same about their room. Candy and Alan are wonderful hosts who make you feel very comfortable. They have done a wonderful job renovating and decorating the house to make it a B&B. We enjoyed visiting with them, and the breakfast was wonderful! They even pointed out a local store that was having a big sale! (Needless to say...we checked it out)!! We weren't there long, unfortunately. It would have been a great base for a couple of days.

  • Liked — The hosts, the rooms, wireless Internet, and breakfast.
  • Disliked — No locks on the bedroom doors. All bedrooms upstairs - not good for some folks with disabilities.

This gem of a B&B is a lovingly restored, beautifully appointed, meticulously kept home run by Candace and Alan -- two warm and personable hosts.
We stopped for one night en route to Canada. We stayed in "Hannah's room" which is spacious and quiet and boasts a sumptuously comfortable queen size bed.
Breakfast was served in the beautiful dining room, where the other guests were equally taken with Greystone.
The price is amazingly low -- but perhaps is what the market will support in Calais. The room we had at our 5-star resort in Canada wasn't nearly as nice and was more than four times the price.
We highly recommend the Greystone Bed and Breakfast.

During our 10 day summer visit of Maine, my wife and I were extrememly fortunate to have discovered The Greystone B&B. Our aim was for lodging that would be convenient to support a day trip into Canada, and Calais, Maine seemed the ideal spot for our 2 night stay. Little did we realize that this beautiful home would become our favorite lodging location during our tour. Candice was an absolutely wonderful host and everything was terrific. She was very helpful in advising us navigating the local town, as well as border crossing info. Amazingly, the nightly rate of our room was the lowest of any we paid around the state during this peak season, but the value received was the best. Too bad we live in Florida. Otherwise, we would visit more often. The Greystone in Calais is an absolute "10".
