“Tao rhymes with WOW!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

Great ambiance, decor, staff, and the food is outstanding! Chef Cara came out at the end of our meal to see how we liked our food and to ask for suggestions on how to improve the food even more. This is an ever-changing menu and she uses her international training to create some interesting and delicious plates. This young chef has a bright future!

“Not for everyone”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

I have been wanting to try Tao for quite sometime, and last night my wife and I went with two other couples. This restaurant serves small plates. The theory is that everyone picks 3-4 plates and the table shares them. There were two problems with this. First, the plates come out of the kitchen randomly which meant that food ordered from one end of the table came out much faster than the other end. While in theory we were sharing the plates, we ordered we all ordered what we wanted and the sharing did not work well. The other problem is that the servings are very small. The sharing works between two people not six. Because of this I would not recommend this restaurant for parties larger than 4 unless coordinate your orders realizing that you are going to get very small portions that challenge group sharing and recognizing the food will be served somewhat randomly. Strike 1

I have heard the restaurant described as gourmet asian. My wife left very hungry because she didn't like any of the three plates she ordered. The plates I ordered were either very heavily spiced or very bland. Perhaps it is, but I did not really like any of the dishes that we tried. Strike 2

Tao is very expensive for what you get. While our drinks were average priced, the glassware was small. Strike 3

Only one person of the six liked the restaurant. The service is helpful and friendly, but that is not enough. I would not recommend this restaurant. There are much better places to eat in Brunswick.

“Gourmet Asian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

If you are in the Brunswick area and want a new eating experience, try the Tao Restaurant. Dishes are imaginative, but tend to be small and a bit pricey. Reservations are definitely recommended on weekends.

“Another jewel in Brunswick's crown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

The group at a dinner earlier in the week were all raving about a restaurant in town we hadn't yet tried, so we decided to make a reservation (recommended) for dinner with friends over the weekend. The raves were pretty much on target. Given the small-plate, everyone-shares approach, our group of 4 had a fair sampling of the tastes on offer, and they generally ranged from the very good (spring roll with lobster tail and compacted watermelon) to the excellent (scallops with sweet corn espuma and spicy sauce) to the sublime (fried goat cheese with shaved fennel, chicken crepes with "dynamite sauce"). If there was a real disappointment, it was the shredded pork buns: too much bun with too little taste, not enough pork. Note that the menu and staff recommend 3-4 dishes per person, but we found 9 dishes for the 4 of us just right, leaving enough room for dessert. About $45/person, including drinks and a tip that was well earned by the attentive but not intrusive staff. All in all, another reason to head to Brunswick if you're in the midcoast area and looking for an exceptionally fine experience.

“Amazing!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Called in at last minute while driving Friday evening. A table was found to start our delightful dinner. Service was helpful and attentive. Dishes each had consistent nuanced flavor and spice balances. Pistascio-pesto duck, fried green tomatoes and pork buns were standouts. Then, desserts amazed again with the Vietnamese coffee closing out a perfect meal. I cook a lot at home and this was the first restaurant meal to impress me in quite awhile.
