“Amazing trip :)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

First off the beach was amazing!!! The sand was white, the water turquoise and the best part NOT super crowded. You can always find a chair! Our trip was a total blast from beginning to end! The shows were fun, the activities were fun, the food was good for an all inclusive and the liquor was top shelf :) Shout out to the entertainment staff rain or shine always making things interesting!!! There was a little bit of walking, but walking never hurt anyone ! The rooms were equipped with everything we needed. We upgraded to the superior privileged and it was well worth it! Housekeeping visited rooms twice a day and the in room beach towel service was awesome! Didn't have to wait on lines for new towels! The extra perks included the tapas restaurant which probably had the best food! The servers were awesome and friendly. What was also awesome is that the restaurants did not require reservations. This resort offered fun and relaxation, great for a group of friends. Downtown Playa del Carmen readily accessible for nightlife :) Overall an excellent experience and would recommend this resort to anyone visiting the area! I would definitely consider coming back. Us four girls really enjoyed our stay!

Room Tip: Do the upgrade to the superior privileged! Def worth the money and the extra perks :)

Staff was excellent and very polite. They all were so happy and truly want to please the guests. Rooms were cleaned very well and food was good. My boyfriend and I caught fish which they cooked up expertly for us. Beach was beautiful and cappuccino from the beach bar in the mornings was delicious.Truly excellent service and you can see the dedication and willingness to go the extra mile from the staff. I would not hesitate to recommend this place.

my husband & i just returned from catalonia after a weeks stay & we loved it! we have been all over the carribbean, this was our first trip to mexico.we are beach lovers,so after reading the reviews,we were sold.truly a big beautiful beach, some waves as it was a little windy, but really nice.the hotel has amazing grounds & are well kept.the rooms are nice, clean, can use bathroom up date.we went privileged & its the way to go,our oceanview room was breathtaking.the food at the mexican restaurant was very good.dont bother going to the italian,& im italian! the terrace overlooking the beach has great food & service, love alberto, hes the best.the creparie is fabulous too for an after beach snack.want to mention enrique who kept our drinks coming while on the beach.as in the other reviews, very few americans, mostly italian, who are pretty cool, however, the french are rude & NOT friendly.Bring dollar bills, the staff work hard & want to see you happy,so they appreciate tips.the coati that live in the jungle are super friendly & calm.the hotel is a relaxed setting, really nice to walk around in,colorful as in a true mexican village.the weather was perfect,no bug issues.we would go again for sure, just know that if you & yours want a vacay away from it all, this is it,no real partying or making friends, here! we enjoyed it,you should go!

Room Tip: pick a privileged ocean view room

My husband and I stayed there from Feb. 19 to 26. We were quite pleased overall. Beautiful long beach, great waves, lots of beach chairs any time of day. Hotel grounds, buildings and rooms are kept very clean. Bars and Restaurant staff were great and the food really good in every restaurant. Would recommend the Privilege option if only for the Tapas restaurant - it was well worth it. Our only negative point would be that upon our arrival at the Reception, they didn't charge eveyone the same price for the Privilege option. Do negociate the price upon your arrival. They can charge you anywhere between $10 pp to 280$ total for the week for a Privilege room (?) I wrote to the Hotel Manager first (no reply) and then to Customer Service questionning this, never got a reply either (not cool). Almost forgot, the nightly shows were really lame...except the Beach party.

My wife and I just returned back from a fabulous sun filled 8 day stay from February 27 to March 7. We had a blast but yet a very restful vacation. We go away to Mexico evey year but always stay at a different resort and not always in the same part of Mexico. I was a little a reluctant to select this resort after reading a few of reviews but pay no attention to the nay sayers. Nothing is perfect in this world. This is a very well run and well maintained resort on one of the best beaches we have every been on. This beach is as good as Aruba for the clean white sand and fabulous clear blue water. Yes the pool area is small and should be bigger with a swim up bar but we didn't come for the pool we came here for the beach setting and awesome ocean. As a lot of people have mentioned there is the "towel thing" with reserving your favorite spot but the only place this really plays out is around the pool. There was plenty of awesome spots and loungers down on the beach and some under the palm trees. Yeah if you come rolling down at 12 noon there may not be much to choose from. I just wished they had a few chairs for down on the beach and not all loungers, after awhile or a few days in a lounger the hips and lower back get a little tight from being in a prone position. The beach is also very flat and makes for great walking on and there is plenty of beach to walk till your hearts content. The only really disapointing facility was their gym. Very small and way outdated but I was able to make due for a pretty good workout.

The entire staff is awesome and super hard working. They go out of their way to make your stay the best vacation experience. Super fast and freindly check in with Erika at the front desk. We asked for a king sized bed and had to wait one night to get our room changed to meet our request. The rooms are spacious and kept cleaned daily. Maybe the mini bar didn't get stock each day but no big deal. The king size bed was perfect and there is plenty of pillows and additional blankets if it gets a little cool which it did for 2 nights (burrrr). The food was pretty darn good. Good selection and they did try to change it up as much as possible in the buffet. We really enjoyed the stake house and mexican resturant. Delmar and Edgar were our waiters at the mexican resturant and we just feel in love with them. One of the best deals was there is no waiting in line at 8am to get a table reservation like at most places we have stayed at. It's a first come first serve for the dinner resturants. We stayed as privileged guests so we had access to the upstairs resturant for a sit down lunch. The lunch buffet at least down by the pool was pretty average with burgers and hotdog kind of food. The juice bar and crepe stand was amazing and a great added touch. Plenty of good named booze to choose from with little if at all wait time at the bar. Enrique busted his hump each and everyday taking orders and serving drinks down on the beach. He always had a smile and was fun to talk and joke with. Our favorite server was Roberto he waited on us at breakfast at the buffet. By our second breakfast Roberto knew my wife wanted pepsi light and myself black coffee. By the third day he had your table set and ready to go as soon as he saw us walk in the door. If they didn't have something you wanted just ask and they brought it to us. No worries the entire staff for the most part speaks pretty good english or enough to where you can communicate with them. It seemed a lot of the staff spoke at least 3 to 4 different languages. Hats off to the animation staff for their best effort to try to include everyone in the activities and there was plenty to choose from. Brenda and Yulia where absolute sweethearts and fun young ladies that we got to visit with and get to know a little bit.

We knew going into this vacation and staying at this hotel was going to be heavily used by european guests mainly from Italy and France. Let's just say not very many north american or british vacation goers staying at this resort and you better get used to it. As americans at least we value our personal space when dealing with people in general. We found a lot of the european people to be down right rude with cutting in front of you when clearly standing in a line or even bumping into you. Maybe that's their culture and how they do things, whatever. We tipped the staff for generally most things and never saw the europeans tip at all. Again it must be a custom thing. I just know a little tip goes a long way for outstanding service. I guess just something to think about. Again, we came for the beach and ocean and not the other guests.

Pros: beach, ocean, staff, clean and well maintained resort.
Cons: small pool, out dated gym.

We will go back again!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: "Bottom line, sign up for the upgrade package"

My husband and I just got back from a wonderful vacation at the Playa Maroma in Mexico. I read most of these reviews before I left and that is what helped us pick this resort. I have been to several all inclusives before in Cuba, the Dr and Mexico but not in this area. Resort was overall a 4 star. Weather was poor the first few days which hindered our enjoyment a little bit. There is really nothing to do on the resort during the rain except eat and drink. There is also no indoor are where entertainment is going on during the day if the weather is poor. We had a couples massage at the spa, very relaxing and enjoyed the small jacuzzi in private.
Pros
Beach- beautiful soft sand, no rocks, plenty of chairs and opportunity for shade
water light blue, small white/clear fishes that you can see swimming around you
long walking area both ways north and south. hardly any locals there to both you
Restaurants did not require reservations, one week stay you could go 4 times to the ala cartes
Best one was the mexican
Buffet had good variety
Grill was open by the beach during the day but very limited
Creperie was open all afternoon and sooooo delicious, great milkshakes too

Cons
Pick up was not done properly at airport, had to go past our resort and to 2 others further south of ours before getting to our resort (this was Nolitours fault not the resorts)
We stayed at first in a room on the south side and it was very loud due to the proximity of the outdoor theater at the resort next door. We complained and changed rooms to the north side and got a free upgrade. Much better and quiet.
Most of the resort has french speaking guests. I knew this from other reviews but didnt think it would be this bad, at least 75% french a lot of whom did not speak any english. If you go to this resor to socialize you will be out of luck.
Also all the staff are mexican and most speak good conversational english except the animation team. They seem to be from different countries and wear shirts from 2 different companies. They have seperate evenets all in french and will talk to you in french all the time.
This got annoying after a while.
I am not sure what brings so many europeans and french to this resort.
Overall the resort was lovely but I think I would pick somewhere else next time.

I would recommend this resort for families and any who speaks french!

Spent the period from February 23 to March 2, 2013 in room 6102.for an all-inclusive vacation. We arrived late because our plane (Canjet) left Montreal 1 hour late. Check-in was quick but first thing they told us was if we wanted an upgrade. We told ourselves: Here we go again with the pressure sales at every turn. We declined and went to our room. We had been put in the Tulum section which is the first building after the reception area. In back of this building is a nother building with a big generator that was on and was very loud. The fan in the room was on at maximum speed and would not stop. My wife didn't want to stay in a noisy section so we went back to the desk. We then took the upgrade in order to get a better location.
This upgrade is $ 20.00 Can per person, per day but you get a free night plus other extras. It came up to $ 240.00.

We must say this was the best move we made. We were relocated in the Palenque section. Beautiful gardens, quiet, right next to the beach and the special restaurants. It's long walk every morning to go to the buffet near the reception area but this walk is like walking in the jungle on a tiles pathway. You get to see the Lemurs all over the area. Quite charming. On the way back to your section, the buildings where your rooms are are hidden by the small pathways cutting off from the main pathway so they are private.

The buffet is varied and changes every day for the most part. If you like Italian, you must go to the Toscana. The Terrace is also very good at night. We had reserved an evening on the outside terrace for a Langoustine supper but we had to take it inside because of cold and rain. The service was super friendly as it was at the Toscana.

The beach is beautiful and you can walk a long way and be alone most of the time. Some bigger hotels have a much smaller beach area that the Catalonia.

If you take excursions from the hotel, you must take the two following: Rio Secreto and the Ek Balam/Cenote Maya combo. Rio Secreto is an excursion in a cave where you wear a wetsuit and helmet with a light. You get to swim, wade and walk through magnificent caves. Our group had two kids about 7 and 10 and the loved it. It lasts about 90 minutes and there's a light Mexican lunch after.
As for Ek Balam and the Cenote, it's a visit to a Mayan city complete with the big stone staircase of 98 steep steps. Very interesting. Not as big as Chichen Itza but at least here you can climb the ruins. The Cenote is a real blast. You get to swin in the Cenote and you get to choose your way of descent: the stairs, the tunnel or the rappel. My wife took the tunnel and I went the Rappel route. It''s about a 100 foot drop to the water but the thrill is something else. Our guide, Frederic, secures you, relaxes you and even joins the last rappel. It's very frightening if you've never done this before but it's completely safe. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy and you regret it's over when you reach the water.

All in all, a great vacation, a great hotel, great staff. I highly reccomend it.

Room Tip: Take the upgrade and request something in the 6100's. ( the Palenque section) It's closer t...
