“Best Resort Ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Very romantic setting, adults only. The Staff went above and beyond all expectations! The food was excellent(especially the chocolate cake). Very clean, safe atmosphere. The personal concierge was new to me and a very nice addition to the excellent service the rest of the staff gives. The entertainment was top notch at Rick's Bar. Very beautiful beaches, with staff serving your needs there as well. This is a small secluded resort yet close enough to Playa Del Carmen to take a 10 minute cab ride. I have stayed at another resort in this area before, but this one is the best! Thanks to all the staff for making my trip the best I ever had!

My wife and I have recently returned from a marvellous two week stay at the El Dorado Maroma Beach.
Following our reading of brochures and ( more importantly!) independent reviews, the room, food, facilities ,beach etc. were all of the standard that we anticipated - i.e. rather high.
However, for us,one element underlines the attraction of this hotel and indicates why the homogeneity that blights many international hotels seems not to intrude here. This is the effectiveness of the staff. Everything necessary during our stay was carried out not only with efficiency and courtesy but also with an open friendliness that stays interesting and interested without being intrusive. Full marks!
An additional bonus for us was the fact that we met guests from the UK , Canada and the USA with whom we had many delightful conversations over a tequila (or three).
Will we return ? - Almost certainly.
Would we recommend it? - Most definitely.

Be prepared to have your heart sink into the pit of your stomach as you drive onto this resort! We had 3 stops at other resorts before finally getting dropped off at ours - this is one of the last resorts on the "strip" so expect this to happen. As you drive up to these other resorts your are treated to manicured gardens, beautiful lawns, spectacular tropical flowers. At El Dorado however, you drive down a disgusting stretch of bumpy road (at times unpaved) through swamp with dirty brown water and mosquitos. And yes, rooms nearest the "lobby" will get mosquitos - enjoy your open air shower!! As for the rest of the resort, there are lots of day beds, hammocks and chairs when you visit in the off season, in Jan-Feb-March you'll likely have to be up at 6am to go claim your spot .

Keep in mind when booking here that your food options are limited. There are only 3 à la carte restaurants, with Papito's being a buffet style restaurant. Starting with Papito's - BE EXTREMELY CONSCIOUS OF SAFE FOOD TEMPERATURES!!! This little open air restaurant struggles with keeping food that needs to stay cold - COLD. And keeping dangerous meats (such as chicken) at the right temperatures. On a few occasions I had to ask to have chicken reheated on the grill to ensure it was safe to eat. At Sabores, the service staff there like to make jokes about their patrons in Spanish thinking that they can get away with it. Until I came along and busted them for making ignorant comments about my wife and I (I speak Spanish). My wife also got sick eating at this restaurant (and no, it wasn't the booze she doesn't drink). As for Mio and Kyoko, the food is good, but the menu never changes. They don't even have the presence of mind to offer daily specials to change things up a little. Also, service levels here vary from server to server, and day to day. I also would have expected better selection for room service. We've stayed at lesser resorts in Canùn and had better food options on the room service menu. In addition, there are days where there is but one person to answer the phone for room service. On two separate occasions we've called between 8-9pm, gotten no answer and tried calling back 3-4 times before we got through.

All-in-all, this is a 3.5 star resort masquerading as a 5 star resort. Don't be fooled by the photos on the website, it really doesn't look that good. I had expected A LOT MORE from the Karisma brand of hotels. In fact, I've had to resort to ranting here, because the email I sent to management has gone ignored. This place has fundamental issues when it comes to service and it has spread from the management down to the service staff. Choose another resort that has their act together.

We sincerely regret that you were not completely satisfied during your recent stay with us. We appreciate your detailed review. We strive to exceed all of our guest’s expectations and are disappointed that we did not meet that goal in this case. We will be certain to share your valuable feedback with all of the departments involved as this is not the typical high quality we aim to provide.

The El Dorado Maroma is located within a protected nature reserve and is home to the mangroves , an essential part of our eco system . unfortunately we did experience an unusual amount of rainfall which has effected the aesthetics of the hotel and its entrance.

Im very sorry to hear that you experienced some sickness , I would like you to know that all our restaurants abide by not only national , but international health and hygiene regulations. we work in assosication with Sani consult which are a specialist company and leaders in this field.

again , we would like to thank you for your feedback and you have my assurance that your comments will be used constructively to make a difference. I hope to see you again at the El Dorado Maroma in the future

Best Regards

We have just got back from here and stayed two weeks through the Exotic travelllers programme. The staff here are wonderful and cannot do enough to make sure you have everything you need. The food is great and really fresh (some of the fish was on ice at the 'fish market' days) with a great choice available. The hotel itself is wonderful, especially as it is an adults only resort - I say resort, there are only 90 odd rooms there. We personally like small places with a friendly feel to them - so this was perfect. We had a garden villa (room 904) over two floors and it really was like a home from home, but with much better weather. The beach staff are wonderful and are always laughing and smiling - especially as they are trying to practice their english and we were trying with our spanish! The emphasis here is do what you want, when you want with no pressure to buy 'trips' or participate in 'aqua aerobics'! All in all a great place and we are considering going back next year - and we usually don't visit the same place twice...

Staff to look out for would be Oscar at breakfast, Gaby and Estella on the beach and our butler Luis who had never heard of a chip roll before :-)

Room Tip: All of the rooms look great, some with infinity pools or 'swim up' facilities. To be honest...

My Lovely Bride and I arrived at El Dorado Maroma on Oct. 22. In spite of 4 solid days of rain during our 9 day stay, we had a marvelous and restful time. Many, many thanks to Exotic Club's (of which we are members) concierge Berenice, who went to the ends of the earth to help with our arrangements at the resort. And our Maroma concierges Renen and Oscar were always ready to assist in any way possible. Thanks to both of you.

And, that theme continued throughout our stay at Maroma. There was no one, staff or service personnel, that did not make it clear that they were genuinely glad to have us visiting their resort. That was the attitude that we found in every restaurant, bar, beach, or activity that we attended. We have had this reaction previously at other Karisma resorts, but certainly Maroma excelled in this way as well.

The beach at Maroma is everything that is said about it. It is the softest white sand that I have ever felt on a beach and was cared for constantly by the Resort. Workers spent every morning removing seaweed and raking the sand. After the 4 days of rain, there was a large crew on the beach to repair and fill in and smooth out the gullies created by the heavy rains. This is probably the best white-sand beach we have ever been on. ONE WARNING: there were a few of us who were covered with bites from the sand flies! Most people were not affected, but those of us who were hypersensitive had a rugged time. IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO NO SEE'UMS OR SAND FLIES, USE OFF OR SOME OTHER REPELLANT! And don't let that keep you away from the beach, it is awesome!

The facilities were at all times sparkling. Our upscale room was a bit of an extravagance for us, but we enjoyed it very much, especially during the 4 days of rain. We were fortunate to be able to use one of the Presidential Villas. This included the ground floor sitting, dining and kitchenette plus a full bathroom with walk through shower to the outside patio. That made a convenient way to clean sand from feet/shoes. There was a lovely upstairs bedroom with sitting area and patio with a gorgeous main bathroom, huge jacuzzi style tub and a walk-through shower out into another shower that was actually outdoors. This may seem odd, but you would be very surprised at how enjoyable it is (all private, of course), and even in the rain. In fact it was even better in the rain. We both used that outdoor shower most of the time. I believe that many of the rooms at Maroma have this innovation - it is worth it. Try it. The room maid and beverage service was excellent and our thanks and shout out to Candido for all of his work in keeping our mess from spreading too far!

Now, as far as the bars go, here's the deal. If you want it, and you know how to make it, just tell them what you want and, if necessary, tell them how to do it and it will be yours. Again, every bartender we found was wanting it our way. My Lovely Bride and I have a unique method of low-calorie drinks. We often will bring with us 2 large "bubba" mugs and a large number of no-sugar powdered drink packets. Since we primarily drink wine, we ask the bartender to mix a couple of packets with white wine and blend it together to make a low-cal frozen wine cooler. There was some language communication difficulty at first, but by the 3rd day I think most of the bartenders knew exactly what we were asking for. Actually, our beach waitress, Estella, knew what we wanted and she was excellent at obtaining it for us without us even having to leave the beach! Thank you Estella and Gaby for your many trips to our end of the beach and your excellent service!

That brings up one of the most enjoyable services that Maroma offers. The beach butlers were of great help to us whenever we were going to the beach. The man that we saw most was Ignacio, who would prepare a couple of beach chairs and a beach bed for us each day that we were out. And he would bring afternoon tidbits for us to sample as well as the fresh water of the day. He would assure that we had all of the towels that we wanted, even to the point of a small towel to lay our books on when reading while sunning our backs. He was GREAT! And we also were helped by Ruben and Armando when necessary. Thanks to you all, guys.

The Fitness Center at Maroma is adequate. Its air conditioning is pretty good (maybe 15 degrees F lower than outside. It has 2 treadmills, 1 elliptical, 1 bicycle, and a few body machines plus the barbell weights. All of the equipment was workable while we were there and the TV worked all but one day, during the rain.

We made use of the Spa at Maroma. Our tradition is to get one or two couples massages during our resort stay. We did that at Maroma. Our opinion is that the value and quality of the massages at Maroma easily exceed what we have received on many cruise ships. (I generally only get a massage while on vacation.) And although they do try to sell their massages to those people on the beach, once you get to the Spa, there is no more up-selling. All the massages that we had we enjoyed very much. We would not have signed up for additional massages if we did not enjoy the first ones. Also, we used the indoor spa area, not the open-air massage huts on the beach. Rain and extremely humid conditions do not enhance a massage, in my opinion. Arely, Erika and Lorena were our masseuses and we liked each one. I enjoyed our couples massage so much with Lorena that I got a 3rd massage, a hot stone massage. I enjoyed both of them very much, but for different reasons. One with a good strong muscle massage, the other with a lighter touch but with the very soothing hot stone. I will put it this way, I am not likely to get another massage on a cruise ship, but I won’t miss that rare treat when we go to Maroma, and I hope these ladies are still there.

There are 4 restaurants at Maroma. We primarily used Papitos as our go-to place for breakfasts & lunches. This is a buffet style eatery that has an open grill for cook-to-order items such as omelets and tacos, depending on what's available at the time. We found this restaurant to suit our needs consistently and, again, the service and staff people were simple excellente! Each morning we were greeted by one of the happiest, loveliest little ladies you could ever meet, Brisa. Her warm welcoming greeting was always like a fresh "Breeze" passing through. She and Ivette always made us feel welcome, along with our waiters Javier, Jonas, Josue, Jose, and some that I cannot recall their names. No matter who was “assigned” to us, everyone in the room would stop by and make sure that our needs were met. The walk up grill was manned sometimes by Roberto, and he can fry an egg perfectly. Plus, he will cook what you want while you wait. We like our bacon very crispy and he never hesitated to put it on the grill to get it right for us. The buffet style French toast didn’t work at all. You just can’t do good French toast if it is left in a steamer dish. And, honestly, the fresh cooked waffles did not suit because they were too hard – always a little too cooked. But the English muffins with Kiwi preserves were delicious every day. (A small tip, if you like your butter soft, just get the foil packets of butter from the buffet, lay a few out on a plate and put the plate on top of the toaster oven. In a few minutes you can have soft or melted butter.) Of course you could just ask you waiter for some melted butter and I’ve no doubt it will appear.

I must be honest here. We judged the food in comparison to the many other “all-inclusive” resorts that we have visited. We did not judge it against a Gordon Ramsey or Wolfgang Puck restaurant. That would not be fair. But, overall, we judged the food to be very good. As always, there were highs and lows. In general the beef was really not the best. We soon chose dishes that contained something else. But that is the thing, there were other pretty good choices most of the time. I enjoyed the fresh grilled grouper from the outdoor grill at Papitos one noon. Couldn’t be any fresher than that. I think Sunday was Prime Rib day at Papitos, and they sliced it from the raw rib when we ordered and cooked it on the grill. It was pretty good. The ‘kabob day was fun, but the best of the ‘kabobs was the chicken. It was very good - very flavorful and moist and cooked just right. Overall, for general daytime meals we favored Papitos heavily, although we did sample Saberos, the Mexican restaurant a few times.

Saberos had a very good roasted poblano dinner that I ordered and would recommend. It was unfortunate that I was a little sick that evening and did not appreciate it as much as I normally would – but it was good enough to recommend.

We also dined at the Italian restaurant a few times. I enjoyed their pasta with meat sauce more than their sirloin steak. The pasta meal was very flavorful, if not particularly creamy. It was more like a pesto marinara, but it was good. The steak was cooked just as I asked, but it was so tough that I didn’t finish it.

By far, our favorite evening restaurant was Kiyoko, the Japanese place. This was partly because they had several appetizers that suited us including the salmon and tuna sashimi, which we ordered several times. (Don’t be afraid to ask for additional wasabi.) We could order 3 slices of each for each of us and truly enjoyed that as a start for our meal. We found the best items for us to be the sashimi, the sushi rolls, the spring rolls, the tempura shrimp, and the 5 ways fried rice.
Now, one actual low point, in my opinion, was the house wine (read “no additional cost”). Frankly, it was poor. We finally settled on the sauvignon blanc as the least bad of the bunch because we did not want to spend additional money on wine. But there are many, many very inexpensive wines of all varieties that would be better than the ones that they served at Maroma. I would suggest that the sommelier do some experimenting & taste-testing to try to upgrade the house wines that are served.

So, overall, if you experiment a little, we think you will find many things that you will consider to be very good, but there are items that are just mediocre, and a couple of bad items as well (the beef ‘kabobs for example). My Lovely Bride and I enjoy gourmet food on occasion in our own area, but we are happy to be able to find very good food consistently at an all-inclusive resort. This would not keep us from going back. If you are a real “foodie” and you feel that it must be a very important factor in your vacation, then it could be a serious item to consider for the all-inclusive venues. Maroma was as good as any that we have experienced.

Before I forget, I want to comment about tipping. Tipping is not required. Be assured of that. However, many visitors desire to show their appreciation for the excellent level of service we receive. At another very small resort, similar to Maroma, we wished to tip several people and it was easy because we saw all the same folks every day. A $20 tip to our “go-to” bartender helped to brighten his/her week and we appreciated the service. But Maroma is somewhat bigger and frankly has so many folks helping us at different times and different days that we had to change our approach. In the future, we will bring a bunch of small bills and simply be prepared to leave a small tip at the time that we have some special service. There are so many folks doing a great job that we simply can’t tip everyone. At most all-inclusive resorts, tipping is unnecessary but appreciated. We appreciate these great people and we will continue with a program of small tips when service is performed.

We are already looking forward to our return to Maroma Magic.

We had another wonderful and relaxing visit at the El Dorado Maroma! We were at the EDM for visit #8 from Oct. 17th though Oct. 26th. We are looking forward to returning next year. Since I have written reviews for each of our visits, I want to concentrate in this review on the changes that we found since our last visit in Nov 2012.

We stayed in Mi Hotelito room 206, which is our favorite. We were offered to move to swim up room 301 after 2 nights but we opted to stay in our room and not bother with the move. We met the lovely Grecia when we arrived as well as Sr. Ignacio the new manager. Grecia was so helpful and ensured that our few requests were taken care of and kept checking on us throughout our visit to ensure we were happy, she is such a benefit to the EDM!

When we arrived, a wedding party was in residence. Unfortunately this wedding party was very disruptive but thankfully management kept on the situation and quickly addressed any less than desirable behavior quickly. This time around, it appeared as if management had given the staff the opportunity to address situations that were escalating as well. The resort even arranged for the party to spend most of one of the days over at the marina since they had been so disruptive to the ambiance of the resort. We were very happy with how this was handled and definitely applaud this new approach – thank you so very much Sr. Ignacio!

We were extremely impressed with the food on this visit, it has improved a great deal. Chef Luis has done an amazing job of recreating the dishes at the EDM. While the menus have not changed at this time (except for Sabores lunch), most of the dishes have been revamped or recreated and have been much improved! We are hoping that some specialty nights will be added again in the future as I can see a trip longer than 9 nights to get a bit repetitive. We really did miss the Mayan night and would love to see a night similar to the Dinner Around the World or Dinner Around Mexico that used to be offered where Chef Luis can create some original dishes to present to select diners. Hopefully these types of experiences will be added in the future as we are thinking our next trip will be 12 nights. We loved the “choose your own ceviche” they did outside of Pepitos one day (you pick the seafood, toppings and liquids and they combine it up for you) and would have loved to try the Shawarma but unfortunately we missed it – but heard it was FABULOUS! Thank you Chef for all of the hard work you have done, you have a great staff!

If we had to pick one thing that we were a bit disappointed about, it would be the lack of servers at the restaurants at dinner. Typically there were 2 servers running around like crazy trying to keep all of the resort guests happy in a particular restaurant. It seemed like each of the restaurants would have greatly benefited from one extra server each night (or one in Sabores and a floater between Mio and Kiyoko). While we are not in any kind of rush at dinner at the EDM, to be served a main course, finish it (not quickly mind you) and then be sitting at the table for 20-30 minutes more with the plates not being cleared and any desert order taken is a bit long in my opinion, and this happened multiple times. While this did not distract from our enjoyment of the resort, it is something that certainly can be approved upon. The servers were certainly doing everything that they could to keep up with the situation and were all extremely pleasant, but they should have had some more help.

To our fellow travelers, it was certainly a pleasure to meet all of you and get to know you! Hopefully our paths will cross in the future at the EDM. Bob and Sue, it was fantastic to see you guys again, hopefully we will see you next year…and Bob thanks a lot, we did have rain starting late on Wednesday and continuing until we left!

We do want to say a big thank you to some of the staff who have become great friends, they are consistently welcoming, very enjoyable to talk with and are real bonuses to the resort (sorry this is long!). Gabriel, your initial welcome to the resort is always so warm, we love seeing you smiling and welcoming us home (the EDM is really our home away from home). Rene, we are sorry that we missed you for most of our visit due to your vacation but it was wonderful to see you and to catch up, though briefly due to the rain. Carlos and Franklin, you made the afternoons and evenings at Bar 24 so wonderful and comfortable! Franklin, we are so sorry that we didn’t get to say goodbye to you, we will see you soon. Emilio, thank you for taking care of us in the morning at Bar 24 and creating special drinks for me when I was undecided – you are the doctor! Adan and Camacho, it was great to see you both again and we enjoyed the games and discussions. Roberto was fantastic at the grill in Peptios in the morning and we were so happy to see that Carlos is still around (he used to man the grill in the morning) and working closely with Chef Luis in the kitchens. Rose and Brisa were always very welcoming in the restaurants. Israel, Oscar, Javier and Jonas were wonderful in Papitos and in Sabores for breakfast and lunch. Diego, Gaby (so glad you are back!) and Pedro Luis made sure we kept ‘hydrated’ while under our palapa covered beach bed. We were also very glad to see Paola (aka Gaby) back and she was our fantastic concierge again, you surely spoil us and we did miss you while you were at the EDR. Luis from Lomas, it is always a pleasure to see you and we will book a trip with you next time (I know, I know, we ALWAYS say that!). Olga, you kept our room in perfect order, and thank you so much for going above and beyond to get me hair conditioner since I can’t get a comb through my hair without it (they no longer have that in each room – so if you need it like me, make sure you bring some). Grecia, you are such an asset to the EDM and I hope you will be around for many visits to come! Oh I know I am missing so many of the wonderful ‘magicians’ who make every trip fantastic, I do apologize.

I heard an interesting bit of information, the resort has 100 rooms (as we all know) and there are about 1000 staff members. No, I did not mistype – 1000! So, a HUGE ¡GRACIAS! to all of those behind the scenes that make the EDM so wonderful. Thank you Sr. Ignacio for continuing to make the EDM the resort we know and love…but better!

This was our first trip to ElDorado Maroma, we will definitely be back. The staff was amazing from the minute we arrived from reception to getting us into our room. We had breakfast at Papitos every morning with Roberto preparing us amazing omelets most mornings, with Oscar and Javier taking care of the coffee and juice and a little spanish lesson. The next part of the day was spent either at the beach or pool. The beach at Maroma was excellent with perfect white sand and the service at beach was great with Pedro and Diego being our primary guys but all were great. As for lunch we Papitos was once again our choose all 8 days. They had a "theme" of the day and if i had to choose a favorite I think it would be the fish bar where they prepared fresh catch of the day outside on the grill "excellent". Then it was back to to beach with the drinks showing on a regular basis. Franklin and Carlos at the pool bar or "Bar 24" took very good care of us every afternoon when we made our way over. As for dinner we visited all of them and the food was excellent at each. I will also have to say both Kenneth and Omar saw to our every want or need.
