We stayed here for 2 weeks in November 2013 ~ we had a wonderful 2 weeks that with a few tweeks would have been perfect. Our room was very spacious, comfortable, clean ~ maid service was brilliant and couldnt be faulted. We arrived very late/early hours and we were given a cold face cloth that smelt divine and a glass of Prosecco and shown to our room quickly ~ A brilliant welcome ~ we were in room 1113 and we had a Happy Anniversary Banner across the door which was lovely. We were upstairs in the main building above the restaurants. Great location and given the choice I think I would choose this block again.
On the first night we were both woken during the night with what can only be described as clanking pipes. We mentioned this the next day at the reception and the concierge just smiled and nodded. We are not sure if this was due to not understanding us or just that she wasnt sure what to do. For the remainder of the holiday we left the AC on during the night which my Husband prefers to do anyway and we found we didnt notice the sound unless the AC was off. There was a steamer in the room which we did not like using so we asked for an iron and ironing board and one was delivered within minutes ~ top service.
We enjoyed all of the restaurants although some a lot more than others ~ we preferred the French restaurant and visited here twice. And we loved the Steak & Lobster in Oceana. The Rustic Mash is heaven on a plate! There were several members of staff that went above and beyond and we made a point of tipping these people more. Although we always tipped when brought drinks, food etc but we noticed a lot of people didnt tip and they were given just as good service.
We had a wonderful meal on the beach one evening and splashed out on a bottle of wine ~ total luxury and far too much food for me but my Husband cleared his plate on every course.
If you can afford to do this and they have availability definitely go for it ~ its a lovely romantic thing to do. We also had a beach cabana one day which was wonderful. I had far too much sun the day before so it was heavenly to laze all day in the shade, be waited on and my Husband still sunbathed on the bed on the beach. We did try to book another later in our holiday but they were fully booked so book early to avoid disappointment. The waitress/waiter service was excellent all day.
Poolside we were impressed with the no saving sunbeds rule and this was enforced on several occasions. We are not "entertainment types" we were happy to watch the aerobics in the pool and the pool volley ball and we were not pressured into joining in.
The Barefoot Grill was fab for lunch and we also had the buffet lunch a few times and the Seaside Grill for lunch too. All very good. But beware the birds at lunch time ~ they seemed to know before we did what the time was and we watched several times as people laid platefuls of food on sunbeds and then popped off to get a napkin only to come back to their burger gone as a lucky gull shared it with friends poolside! The Coffee bar does fab takeaway cold coffees which we started having into our second week ~ I wished we had discovered these earlier. Although the cakes were teeny tiny bitesized so order a couple x
We did a couple of trips during our 2 weeks one day was Tulum and Xel Ha which was snorkelling etc ~ Tulum was fab we wished we had more time there and Xel Ha was good but we felt it was too long to be there as we enjoyed Tulum more. The food at Xel Ha was great and there were plenty of spots to rest and sit in the sun if thats what you want to do. The second trip was to Xplor which is lots of Zip Wires, underground caves, Off Roading Jeep ~ now I really wasnt looking forward to this but we had the best day ever ~ we laughed until we cried, we did things we probably will never do again with the heights on the zip wires and the speeds we travelled but I am so so so glad we did do it as it was a blast! We are in our mid/late 40's and I was worried we would be the oldies but we werent there was a whole range of ages from tiny tots to elderly grans and grandpas ~ good fun for everyone. Definitely take pool shoes as we bought them there and they were much cheaper at home. The food was good too but very busy at lunchtime.
Overall I would say I would be more than happy if I ever get to go back to Secrets ~ The service was excellent, the location was perfect and now I am back home I wished I had appreciated it a bit more whilst there. Members of staff that made an impression on us were:
David in the Italian restaurant, The boy who comes round with the bread in the French Restaurant ~ what a lovely young man, Manuel in Oceana ~ Excellente!, Ricardo in Seaside was a star and Limbert who was our waiter on our beach meal ~ they all made our special holiday that little bit more special ~ thank you x x x
