Before I picked a resort I read many of the reviews on Tripadvisor. I didn’t place much value in the excellent comments as I assumed they were none discriminating vacationers overwhelmed by a beautiful tropical location. I focused on the terrible comments looking for a theme or insight to base a judgment and eliminate potential resorts from our selection list. I really didn’t find any of those comments for the SMB.

I’ll admit that I was skeptical, thinking no resort could be as good as the thousands of excellent comments suggest. I was wrong.

Facilities: Everything appeared to be well kept and maintained. We loved our swim-out suite room. It was nicely appointed and very practical while presenting just the right touch of elegance. The beach was beautiful and was constantly maintained by the SMB staff. Pools and ground also showed attention to detail with regard to cleanliness and maintenance. Restaurants were decorated to achieve the correct ambiance. Food was good quality and very tasty. Food selection was more than anything I every expected. Basically, everything was as good or better than one would expect for a resort of this type.

What makes the difference in my opinion is the staff. The staff seemed to anticipate our wants and needs before we needed to ask. It is obvious that much attention is placed on training the staff to maintain this high standard. Even more important is that all the staff was very pleasant and personable.

Our first morning, Arturo met us at the pool and made sure we were well cared for. He met us daily and made sure we were comfortable and well attended to either at the pool or on the beach.

At the swim-up bar in the main pool we met Demetrio (“papi”) and Ruben. Both were very good at remembering my specific tastes when mixing drinks. I never need to ask a second time. Both were very pleasant and personable. Erika waited on us while lounging at the pool and seemed quiet, yet was very attentive to our needs. We found out she was very personable and had a charming sense of humor too. While on the beach, Marco kept us well stocked with refreshments. It was a hot day and Marco was busy, but he made us feel like we were his only guests.

After one long day, we were tired and looking for quiet and relaxing place to eat. We stopped at the World Cafe. Our waiter Pablo showered us with the best service I think I ever received at a restaurant. All this while he was being charming and amusing.

All week Manny and Cesar kept us laughing while entertaining us around the pool and in the evening, engaging us in many activities. Later we met Jordan and Miguel who were equally engaging and personable.

Every time we stopped by our room, we could see that Loyda had cleaned, checked, restocked, or turned down the bed for us. It was better that living at home with mom.

There were so many others that made this vacation so enjoyable. The point being that anyone can build a lavish, well appointed, resort in a beautiful tropical location. The difference is in the staff and how they treat and interact with you and these people made a lasting impression on me. All my thanks goes out to the to the staff and management of the SMB!

What a wonderful vacation! We absolutely enjoyed our time at Secrets Maroma Jan 29 to Feb 8.
We were in one of the closest buildings to the main complex where the majority of the restaurants and night life took place. Building 22, room 2230. This building is on the south side of the walkway to the beach. Our room was on the end, closest to the walkway.
We had a beautiful view of the pathway leading to the beach and had what I would consider a partial ocean view.
The fitness center was well equipped with 5 elliptical, 5 treadmills and various weight machines, free weights, mats etc. All but one day, there was never more than 3 or 4 people taking advantage of the facility.
The first day, as we walked to the pool/beach area, we met Arturo. What a nice young man, who for the next 10 days, greeted us by name and asked us how our day was. The service by all the staff was outstanding! We enjoyed seeing Sinuhe at the main bar again, as we meet him last year at Secrets Silversands. Our concierge's Paulina and Jean were very helpful in arranging tee times and reservations for the Himitsu hibachi resturant.
Our favorite resturant was Bordeaux, followed by Portofino, although we enjoyed all the restaurants! Don't miss the mahi mahi at the Barefoot Grill at lunch time. They don't have it everyday, so when they do be sure to try it!
The beach is what sold us on this resort, so beautiful! We really enjoyed taking the Hobie Cat out for a sail a few times.
We've been to Secrets Capri, twice, Silversands and now Maromoa during Super Bowl Sunday and they really know how to put on a beach party!! They even went as far as digging a large hole in the sand which was turned into a second bar for the party.
We will definitely be back!!

We had a very nice week at this resort, but it was not perfect. The not-so-good: Our room was an 8 minute walk to the beach and right next to the theater where the very over-amplified evening performances took place. It was supposed to be a "Partial Ocean View" room, but had only the tiniest speck of an ocean view if you were standing at the balcony railing. The breakfast and lunch buffets were quite good, but the dinners varied greatly. Expect more over-amplified music at some of the restaurants at this resort. The Pina Coladas and Margaritas were made from mixes that we did not like, but the house wines were pretty good. There were conventions taking place the entire week.

The good: The beach was beautiful and the weather was perfect most of the week. There was
plenty of seating and shade on the beach. The service was very good. The resort is nicely landscaped and is very clean and well kept.

Staff was excellent especially Benito and Erika at the pool and Fernando and Jordan on entertainment staff.
Stayed in swim out room- floors very dangerous needs mats on the deck .
Dinner took a long time, food was worth it though.
Return trip a must.

This was our second stay at SMB the first in sept 2011 was out of this world perfect in everyway. They advertise this as the perfect couples getaway romantic secluded environment. We paid nearly £6000 for this holiday.
The bad points, we were put into a room which was really nice above the lobby excellent views large balcony and hot tub. After five days we were requested to move as they were redecorating, needless to say was not happy but got a free upgrade to the preferred club which is actually not worth paying extra for. But this was just our experience it wont happen to everyone.
Then the corporate/ business fare started every three or four days a large group of arrogant and loud American and French Canadian's arrived namely Yellow Mexican Fusion as they called it groups from STANLEY and DEWALT, I would be embarrassed as a company owner to employ these people, one group at the Japanese restaurant had been drinking all day and had vomited in the restaurant, the remainder of the group found this hilarious and started to mock vomit noises, ASK YOURSELF is this a romantic atmosphere you would want for that money ?.
The staff who i felt awful for could do nothing and just watched.
We walked out.
Breakfast was a joke it was like they had never been fed as they would scramble for the food ushered along by their group leaders.
without prolonging the report it has far removed itself from a romantic couples getaway leaning towards the more lucrative corporate business side.
Also a hotel has been occupied next door which has lots of children and loud music bellows out on the beach during the day not a relaxing atmosphere at all.
This hotel has in my opinion dropped its standards below a 4* and Thomas Cook should reflect this in their brochure.
There are other hotels which would be above this, i am in no way a snob but i did expect a bit of class and this hotel does not provide that. people say the british are horrible on holiday, i have never witnessed behaviour like it.
On a positive note the staff are extremely courteous and the food was nice at times, i cannot say anything positive really as things had changed so much including the prices going up by double.
A romantic meal on the beach was $150 it is now between $340 and 390 depending on which menu you have.
In a nutshell go somewhere else YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.

The Hotel was nearly perfect but for Mexican-Standarts it was the best you can get. The staff was excellent and the service was garanteed all the time. There were people from all over the world. The room was exactly how it was described on the Homepage of the Internet. Premium Drinks were included all the Time and the food was great. The Massage was also a nice experiance.
