We spent a week at Secrets Maroma for our Honeymoon between 1st January and the 8th January. We are happy with the arrangements that The Holiday Place made for us and had no trouble with the Virgin Premium Economy flights which gave us plenty of baggage allowance and leg room for the almost 11hr flight from the UK .
Tip: Our flight arrived in the evening and we were one of the first off the plane and through the baggage collect. We didn't have private transfers as we were worried about the safety/security aspect. We need not have been, and wished we had paid for private transfers as being really tired we then had to wait at the airport for about 1.5 hrs for 2 other couples and then make the approx 2hr journey to the resort ...... on the return journey this wasn't so bad as it was daytime and we knew what to expect. So if you can afford it and you find yourself traveling in the evening consider private transfers.
Secrets Maroma itself is Impressive and we really are hard pressed to think of anything that needs improving. As it was our honeymoon we opted for the preferred club Swim out room (block 26) and I can honestly say that I used my swim out everyday although rarely did i see anyone else in there. A common comment on Trip advisor is that they are cold but I honestly felt they were fine but they can be heated up if you ask the concierge.
Rooms were well stocked with toiletries, clean towels, coffee , water, beers and soft drinks. Also re-stocked daily were 3 miniatures usually Jack Daniels, vodka and either Casa rum or Bacardi. Some snacks were provided in the room such as Pringles and M&Ms.
Note; There was no hair conditioner provided in the room, we noticed the Spa provided some for use so asked if we could take some to our room which they let us do. This was enough for the week however; we found out that it can be requested through your Concierge. In addition the showers in the Spa changing rooms are freezing several people commented on this and it was more pleasant to just go back to the room to shower.
Internet access in the room and on the patio was fast and reliable, Ipod docks in room worked well and came in handy, Secrets also has an Iphone App which lets you call your room for free which may be useful. The TV audio was weird but then I didn't know how to adjust it my husband did this and then it could be heard properly and even from the Jacuzzi bath. He made full use of the free playboy porn channel ha ha ha.
Our concierge Roberto was very helpful and polite and organised all our additional honeymoon activities/gifts for us. It is worth mentioning that as Honeymooners staying in a swimout preferred club we received the following:
-bottle of sparkling wine in room on arrival and fruit,
- honeymoon breakfast (as others have said its just fruit and sparkling wine, so go to breakfast after or order some more through room service)
- A wonderful dinner on the beach by Mario and his team (Roberto arranged for it to have no Fish even though it was supposed to be a set menu of surf n' turf)
- A massage at the spa and a body scrub (we could have chosen facials instead of the scrub) and i must say i was really impressed with this and we used the Spa everyday mainly for the Hydrotherapy circuit and steam rooms which were free for preferred club users or else a whopping $89 per visit.
- A sweet little honeymoon banner on the door which we got to keep , v thoughtful. Thank you
- A large bottle of Bacardi (we could have had Vodka or JD instead)
Very worthwhile , especially if you were hoping to have these kinds of experiences on Honeymoon ;-) Do remember to take your Wedding Certificate though as they did ask to see it and make sure that your travel Rep has specified you are on Honeymoon and wish for this package.
Hotel Dining and Activities;
We were on Honeymoon so only ate out on a handful of occasions preferring instead to make full use of the free 24hr room service, which, except for the bland penne pasta, we thoroughly enjoyed. There was enough variety to keep us nourished and interested for breakfast, dinner and random Cake and Ice cream and coffee drops all week.
We did try the following for Meals, Beverages:
Barefoot Grill - Casual poolside lunch. We ate here several times , lovely Burgers , Vegetables, chips and meats cooked in front of you. A waiter brought us Beers and/ or Mojito cocktails when seated at the tables. Plenty of entertainment from the Lizards and Coati that would show up hoping for scraps. One day there was no table available and so being on my own i just went and took my lunch to the beach and was still brought a mojito by a waiter :-) but with a better view.
CoCo Cafe- We are huge Coffee fans and would stop of here a few times a day. A great place for a variety of hot or iced Coffee and after Dinner Liqueur Coffees. It is worth noting as we spoke to a few people who didn't realize that you could have a take away Coffee or if you prefer 'your Coffee to go' . We also did the free Coffee tasting activity which was enjoyable and informative and the Barrister was an award winning coffee artist. It was fun to see how quickly she put Tulips and Butterfly pictures on peoples Coffee.
El Patio - The Mexican restaurant. We sat inside which had a nice Interior however; it was cold as they had the air con on quite high. In fairness I think we were quite tired as we had been up early and on a day trip to Cozumel diving so the service did seem ridiculously slow but tiredness may have made this seem worse than it was. I liked my food the favorite being the Pudding which was a Mexican version of Creme Brulee
World Cafe - Breakfast Vast selection,Continental, cooked, pancake stations, cereals, fruit . cheeses,meats, yoghurts ect... ect.... only made it here once which is a shame but room service breakfast was more convenient especially when we had diving or a day trip with an early start. This restaurant is buffet style and we went up several times. Only thing missing for Brits was Mushrooms and Beans in the cooked breakfast section and the German Sausage tasted just plain weird... oh well plenty more food was available to try.
Preferred Club Lounge - We only used this place a few times but liked the quietness the computer facilities (could print off our return flight details and day trip details), the bar staff and the almost individual attention. In busier periods such as Christmas and New Year week I imagine this Lounge more than proves it's worth. I had a nice Rum Punch made for me here, My Husband brought an Amaretto and Coke back to the room from here and he tried the continental breakfast here one morning very early before diving which he said was unfortunately just a few stale pastries..... shame, but he isn't one for Continental style breakfasts anyhow.
We only tried the coffee tasting and the Riffle shooting both of which we enjoyed. I would also like to have partook in the bingo, the water aerobics and the tequila tasting but either missed them due to day trips or was feeling too relaxed/lazy at the time.
Sailing, Diving, Snorkeling:
We also took out a Hobie Cat from the water sports centre for a while which was great fun but the water was quite rough so i got scared and we came back in after 20 minutes.
My husband is going to write a separate review for all the dives he did with Aqua world but I can say that i really enjoyed the Diving at Cozumel and he raved about the Cenote Dive but was less enthused by the Playa Wreck and Reef morning.
No Fish or Reef directly off beach for snorkeling, swimming from the resort which is a shame and when i say none i mean i did not spot a single fish.
Tulum and Snorkel Day Trip;
We also enjoyed a wonderful day trip through edventures booked whilst in the UK to Tulum, Snorkeling in a Cenote, snorkeling with turtles in Akmul, lunch, and then a final snorkel in a Lagoon that was full of Fish. Bit cold though so if you have a wet suit or rash vest worth wearing. This was so enjoyable and I would not hesitate to recommend this trip to others, excellent value and only one other friendly and fun Ozzie couple in our group.
I think enough has been written about the Beach which really is beautiful and the Pools which are very busy but Fun and convenient for unlimited drinks if that is your kind of thing ( we didn't see any bad drunken behavior) and have tried to give a review from a honeymoon point of view. I would recommend this resort to others and would definitely return as we hope to see more of Mexico and could not think of a better base from which to explore, next time we won't be having such a romantic secluded holiday but will look to the more active, fun side of the resort.
