“Different but nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

This was a very reasonable place to stay compared to many other places we tried. We were staying on a weekend night and found the rooms very adequate. The decor is definitely dated but that is part of the charm, Shower was a little small but we managed. The lodge had a definite old smell to it but so would an old B&B. Breakfast was good with nice selection. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the king room with adjoining room with twin beds. Worked good for us.

Our family of 5 spent July 4th here this year and have been raving about it to anyone who will listen.
It was great value and a unique laid back vacation experience. Our hosts were very helpful in advising us of activities in the area and there is lots to do. We had adjoining rooms to accommodate my husband and I and our 3 children and found this to be a great set up. Lots of history associated with the lodge which was very interesting. No pool on the property but Barrett's park is not far away, great little swimming spot for younger kids. The breakfast was great. Ideal get away spot for families. We will definitely be back!

What a great lodge! We have stayed here several times. This property was built in the 1920's as a luxury resort. It reminds me of an Adirondack Great Camp, only on a smaller scale. It is rustic Maine at its best, located in the woods only a short drive up the hill from the shores of Boothbay Harbor. The property has several buildings, complete with rustic branch-and-log interiors and stone fireplaces. The breakfast (included in the price of your room) is outstanding. It looks like a buffet in a restaurant. How about pumpkin-cranberry French toast? Yum! Three varieties of breakfast meat, two varieties of eggs, home fries, assortments of juices and fruits, breads, muffins, etc. etc. We were so stuffed after breakfast we didn't need to eat until supper. They don't serve supper at the lodge, so we all rode our motorcycles into town each day to eat at one of the many great restaurants there. Our rooms were clean and comfortable, and we slept like logs (which was appropriate, considering where we were). The only drawback was that there is no pool on the property, but you are in Boothbay Harbor, so you can use the public beach. This is a perfect spot for a large group (ours had 18 people). A final note: the owners are soooo friendly. We will be back again!

Sprucewold is a great rustic lodge sitting atop the Maine hills which overlook Boothbay Harbor. Although you can't see the harbor from the lodge, it is very close. If you want a 5 star hotel with full concierge service, I wouldn't stay here. However if you want a rustic Maine Inn with wood burning fireplaces, owners who make your feel totallly at home and a wonderul breakfast buffet all at over 50% less than anywhere else, I'd recommend the Sprucewold in a heart beat. Richard and Dana are truely wonderful hosts. They recommended a harbor boat cruise which we thoroughly enjoyed as well as several great restaurants on the harbor.

We stayed here 3 nights in July and had a wonderful time. Our family consisted of 2 adults, 9 and 7 year old kids. We had a king room adjoining a room with two twin beds, and the layout was perfect. Part of what makes a good vacation is that everyone has their own space and we're not on top of each other. We could put kids to bed and still leave our light on to read.
Can't say enough good things about the breakfast. It was what you'd expect from a B&B and even pleased the kids. Was the perfect start to all the activities we had planned each day. Plus you never knew who you'd be sitting next to and the conversation that might be had.
The buildings were great for exploring. We'd let the kids make a cup of hot chocolate and sit out on the rockers on the front porch. They might wander across to sit on the outside swing.
This may not be the place for everyone. If you need to be plugged in every single minute, look elsewhere. There are no TVs or phones, and internet service was spotty. We prefer to spend quality family time and entertain ourselves. We all agreed that this was the only place for us to stay and really helped to make our vacation. Where else can you find a place like this?

I'm so glad we stayed here. I rate unique experiences way over cookie cutter. It was clean, quiet, comfortable and affordable. The breakfast was so good. I had eggs, bacon, sausage, 2 kinds of pancakes and a muffin (there was more than that). The place was decorated with interesting things and Richard was so nice. The fireplace was nice at night. There was a box fan in the room which we liked. We would definitely come back here.

When our group of 4 couples booked to stay at the Sprucewold we had no idea what to expect!!! When we arrived we checked in across the street (single lane blacktopped country road) from the lodge. We walked into a rustic gathering / restaurant area with 3 fireplaces, fresh flowers, a sitting area and game area. I felt like I was in Tennessee again. It was a pleasant surprise!! We were warmly greeted by Richard who makes you feel welcome. Then we were introduced to Dana (Richards wife) who is a wonderful woman. We were taken across the street to the Lodge.
Before I go any further I must say I am very picky about where I stay. My first and utmost request is that the place be clean.
The lobby is dated but clean! You do smell a little bit of a musty smell when you walk in, at first I was a little worried but it is not bad. You step back in time when you visit the lodge. You walk down a hallway with books on either side that you can read at your leisure, some of the books are dated early 1900's. The rooms are dated, but again the beds are clean and comfortable and the bathrooms are also clean. There are no TVs or phones in the rooms and my room only had one plug!!! Something I would think would bother me......but it didn't!! It was nice to relax and enjoy a peaceful week. You can watch TV in the gathering area across the road from the lodge, it has wifi and is a wonderful place to relax, meet and talk to other guests. Richard helped us with places to see and things to do. He knows so much about the area and sent us to the right places to see.
You have coffee waiting for you in the morning in the lodge lobby and the fireplace kept the lobby warm on the chilly mornings. Then you go to the restaurant and have a delicious breakfast buffet waiting for you every morning. (Thank You Jim) If you visit the area stay at this wonderful place in the pines!!!! We all live in PA and we felt like family there. If I ever go back to the Boothbay Harbor area, I will stay at the Sprucewold!!
