“Don't Miss out on this B&B when in Boothbay Harbor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2007

We feel that we really lucked out when we found and stayed at the Topside Inn. Talk about location, the view of the harbor and downtown area is beautiful. Our room was huge and very clean, well stocked and convenient to the beautiful grounds. Private parking in a lot adjacent to the Inn (parking is a challenge in Boothbay Harbor). Ed & Brian are wonderful and gracious host, even offering to help with our luggage. And last but certainly not least is the tremendous breakfast. Fresh fruit, muffins, a hot entre' which is delicious and imaginative, and the absolute best fresh yogurt and granola you have ever had. We loved Boothbay Harbor and will surely return and when we do we will stay at the Topside Inn.

We stayed at the Topside Inn last week for 2 days and loved the place. Everything was just right and very relaxing. The view from the Inn is fantastic but the service and attention to detail was even better. The innkeepers succeed in making you feel at home and are trying hard to perfect this little gem of an Inn that they have only owned for 5 years. We stayed in one of the rooms away from the main house and had zero complaints. Our 12 year old son loved the place and wanted to stay longer( loved the breakfast and afternoon cookies). The Inn is on top of a hill so the short climb back from town can be a challenge if you are not in shape but you could always call a cab if that is a concern. We also stayed at the Rocktide Inn this trip but the Topside was by far the better choice. We can't wait to return.

We stayed at the Topside for 2 nights in early May. I would find it difficult to fault anything about this superb Inn. Brian and Ed were friendly and helpful, recommending places to visit and to eat. They even lent me their road atlas. The rooms were beautifully decorated, and as they were at the top of the house gave the most wonderful views. I still think of sitting on the chair on the landing and gazing out at the Harbour. We felt relaxed, and that the Inn was a home from home. I would recommend the Topside without hesitation.

Stayed overnight with Brian and Ed, owners of the Topside Inn. What a
great stay. We had a room at the top of the stairs facing the harbor,
and the view, was spectacular. The room appointments were nice as well. The people we met there were great fun, and had wonderful conversations. The only downside was the shower broke, which was an inconvenience, but manageable. Also the internet wireless connection wasn't working right, which was also inconvenient. Loved staying there, and sat for hours on the front porch talking, drinking wine, and looking at the view. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

  • Liked — The views and the owners
  • Disliked — Lack of Internet which shold be fixed now.

the inn has something for everybody! the grounds are immaculate-- lawns, gardens, and best view of the water. the common areas are comfortable, tasteful, and stylish. the guest rooms in the main house
are absolutely lovely and full of character. the rooms in the other buildings are more motel style, but are updated and can accomodate children, dogs, etc if needed. i'd stay in the main house, but then i am drawn to the charm of grand old houses. breakfast is much more than the usual continental fare-- fresh pastries, hot items, and the best homemade granola on the planet. lastly, the hosts are truly delightful and friendly and really make you feel like a guest in their house. they set the tone, rain or shine, for a relaxing and liesurely time. this place is topnotch!

Don't get me wrong. The main building of this place is decent. I stayed in the lodge building with my dog. The lodge is kind of off to the side. The lodge room for pets has a low ceiling and the walls are warped from humidity (?). The bathroom is old and has no fan. Do not take a shower in the summer if it is hot because your dog will die of the heat. There is a cross draft through the room from across the hill but if its hot outside it will be just as hot inside. This review has nothing to do with the main inn where I did not stay.

  • Liked — Location on top of the hill
  • Disliked — This place needs air conditioning badly

My wife and I have stayed at the Topside on our annual trip to Maine for what has to be at least twenty years. It has always been a great place to stay as far as location in the town and spectacular views, but since Brian and Ed have taken over in recent years, the accomodations have become excellent as well.

It is located in a mostly-residential area, so there is little car or foot traffic nearby. But it is only a two minute walk down the hill to get to the main part of town where all the shops and restaurants are.

You have your choice of a room in the inn house or in one of two small motel units detached from the inn. The inn rooms are beautiful, as you can tell from the pictures posted on this site. The motel units are definitely not modern, but in excellent repair and very neat and clean.

Breakfast is great. There is always homemade granola ( those of you who mock granola will change your mind when you've tasted this), as well as a hot dish prepared to order. Cereal, bagels, muffins, toast, etc. are also always on the buffet.

Brian and Ed are great hosts. You will not regret entrusting yourself to their hospitality.
