Our family of 4 spent a week at Gray's Homestead on Southport Island, ME. We weren't sure what to expect, but found Gray's to be more than adequate. Gray's offered an affordable, beautiful campground with a family atmosphere. There was an abundance of rocks to climb and shoreline to explore as the tide came in and went out. There is a small swimming beach and many places to try your luck fishing. Small wildlife is in abundance at Gray's. On a clear night, the sky is tremendous!
Gray's is about 10 minutes away from downtown Boothbay Harbor.
Southport Island is a little off the beaten path and consequently doesn't have the congested traffic that Boothbay Harbor has in the summer. There is a small grocery store on the other side of the island from Gray's that offers necessities as well as a little lunch. Please note that many of Gray's campsites are small- especially the ones with an oceanfront view. The oceanfront view campsites get a lot of camper foot traffic, so privacy could be an issue. Other campsites are set in the woods and many of these are also small. The largest campsite is 29C which is actually a double spot. It offeres privacy and spaciousness, but it is the farthest away from the ocean. The bath house is centrally located in the woods and is sufficient. The interior of the bath house is not lit at night, so bring a flashlight. The showers require quarters, but the water is warm. There are flush toilets in the bath house. We were not particularly impressed with the bath house, but others who had camped in the area before told us how clean and nice they thought the bath house was. All and all, Gray's was a nice place to stay and we're glad that we were able to get a reservation. Our only regret was that we never had the pleasure of meeting the Gray's.
