We've been going to Boothbay Harbor for many years. This past summer we finally decided to take some visiting friends out for a cabbage island clam bake. We had a great time.
We took the water bus from Boothbay Harbor out to Cabbage Island. When I say water bus, I mean it. Rows of bench seats in a darkened bus like enclosure. It would have been nice to sit out side instead of this decrepit looking thing but the real fun began when we arrived at the island so it wasn't too bad even though the bus is in desperate need of a makeover (bigger windows on the lower level, a good cleaning, paint, speakers). Here's a tip: get there early to board the boat and try to get a seat on the upper level instead of in the dungeon like we were.
The sound system is pretty poor like others have said over the years and it seems like the boat owners are in no hurry to fix it. Testing the speakers on an empty boat probably makes them sound good to them but on a full boat with people talking and the motor droning we couldn't hear much of what the narrator was saying.
Now on to the island. It's a beautiful spot! The people that work there are very friendly and attentive. They had a volleyball net setup and there were little trails snaking all over the island.
The lobster bake was quite delicious and the service was very good. Lots of food. Basically you find a place to sit either indoors or at one of the picnic tables on the grounds. The servers take good care of you. We had a great time at Cabbage Island and look forward to a return visit.
