“Hike in a natural habitat alive with birds and flora”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Another great hiking excursion thanks to the landtrust folks. Careful with the local map of the area. It took us a while to find it since the road section is not indicated properly and the distances are not clear. Take Back River Road north and then follow the sign...it will be well worth it!

We loved Oven's Mouth as it combined river with salt water courses and provided a variety of scenic experiences, all lovely.

“Good Stretch - Easy on your Soul and Sole”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2012

Avid hikers most likely have visited Acadia and Camden Hills, and while the crashing waves and jagged coast are breath-taking, sometimes a quiet day with mother nature is overdue.

Oven's Mouth Preserve wanders through a mixed forest of lovely dappled sunshine. The forest floor in many areas is a false floor of tangled roots covered in pine straw and leaves. It's gloriously easy to walk on and a welcome relief from jagged-edged granite.

Though there's not much vertical challenge, connecting the east and west loops of the Preserve in one hike makes a four-mile outing and is suitable for trail running. There are plentiful vistas and areas of interest. Wet areas on the trail are typically covered with boards, logs, rocks and stump cross-cuts. Be cautious of the cross-cuts, as many of them are not anchored.

A family with children should consider one loop. There are no facilities at the Preserve, so be prepared with tissues and a pack-it-out disposal bag. Plenty of maps are available at the trailhead. The children will have fun looking for the trail-marking blazes on the trees.

Just the right mix of woodlands and water. Several nice hikes. Easy parking and clearly marked trails.
