Feb 21, 2009 | Trip type: Family

We stayed at the Chapman Inn during February vacation with our kids, ages 17 and 20. We had the 2 third floor rooms, which included a small sitting area with a bathroom between them. This arrangement worked out well for us. The sitting area included a foldup bed, which my daughter chose to use rather than sleep in the queen bed with her brother.

The rooms and Inn were neat and clean. The Inn dates from the Civil War, so no surprise that the floors were uneven and creaky. The biggest downside was the bathroom. As someone else mentioned, the sloped ceilings made it way too short for my 6'2" husband and 6' son. My husband would have given only 3 stars for this reason.

The breakfast was great. Plenty of food, fresh baked breads, muffins and cinnamon rolls to die for. Hot foods included eggs, potatoes, sausage and bacon. Fresh fruit too.

We did see the dog snap at a couple people, so keep your distance. The cat was very pleasant.

We just spent two nights at the Chapman Inn, and it was the highlight of our trip. Fred & Sandra were just great, the room(we had room number 7) was very comfortable and clean, and the breakfast was just the best. There were four of us, my husband and our two children, 8 and 11, and this was one of the few inns that seemed to really like children. The kids liked the game room, it was a great place to burn off energy. We also thought that the price was quite reasonable, a very good value. Highly recommend!

We are a family of four who spent two days and nights at the Chapman. The room had three beds which worked well for us (parents plus two daughters). The beds were comfortable, the room and bathroom very clean, and the atmosphere peaceful. We were also close to activities (e.g., spent a beautiful day kayaking on the river) and restaurants (I recommend the Jolly Drayman). Bethel isn't a bustling town, but there is more there than we had anticipated.

We also enjoyed the breakfast at the Chapman (Fred does know his way around the kitchen).

We recommend this as an excellent place to stay (and we usually stay at B&Bs when we travel).

I only write about places I like very much, but I don't give anyone an 'excellent' rates anymore. I travel 50% for my job, so I visit lots of places. I work for a non-profit, so I am on tight budget.
I like the Chapman Inn for the food and the hospitality. This morning, homemade blueberry muffins that may be the best I've ever had; also homemade white and wheat. I had an omelet with mushrooms and carmelized onions. Truly outstanding, and all cooked by Fred, one of the proprietors, who truly loves what he's doing and does it well. Hospitality: As good as the food. Room number 4: Simple and spotless, but no alarm clock. Great location on town green, easy to find and good parking. This stay was a very good value and a distinct pleasure

I concur with those that said the website for the Chapman was less than forthcoming. I booked a room that was listed as having a "connecting" bathroom. The bathroom was actually in the hall and had no direct connection with my room. You had to walk into a public hallway to access it. The other issue with the bathroom was that (as it is on the top floor) it had a sloping ceiling. At 6' 2" I could not stand at the sink to shave/brush my teeth and had to crouch. The shower nozel was essentially at neck level.

The website also indicated that the room had A/C which was in fact a window unit that lacked an extenstion cord long enough to reach the plug. In their defense it was late May in Maine and was probably the first warm weekend of the year. Still it was balmy in the room during the day and given the fact that it was the top floor it was "attic like" in climate.

On the plus side, the building was neat and given its historic nature alot of the above issues should have been expected but my issue was that the website sold it as something it was not.

The breakfast was above average and the service was friendly. The bed was comfortable and the room was about what I was expecting in terms of furnishing and housekeeping. The common areas were inviting and well kept.

End of the day it just didn't live up to my expectations and its billing. I didn't find it to be a good value for the dollar.
