“Good bang for your buck”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

I looked briefly at the negative reviews. The house is circa 1865. A building this age will not be perfect. It will have slightly sloping floors in places, made from irregularly milled boards (most likely milled on site) older, dated wallpaper, maybe dead bugs in the hall lights, etc. In short it is not the Waldolf-Astoria. On the other hand, one does not pay for W-A prices either, but very reasonable, seeing as how it is situated on the town's charming center a few miles from skiing destinations or pleasant hiking on numerous trails. My wife and I found it quiet for sleeping at night, quiet in general, warm enough (in our case cool enough--we like it cool), and the fireplace was inviting. Mike the dog was not a problem for us, and we did not see a cat, let alone on the tables. We did not see any paranormal activity, so if you freak out easily about that sort of thing, don't worry, they keep to themselves. The breakfast was hot and filling. Awesome french toast ( I think it's encrusted in brown sugar that carmelizes), good blueberry pancakes and muffins, and all the fruit and bagels and toast you could want. The omlettes were moist. Fred has a dry sense of humor that some may need to get used to if they take things too literally, but its all in good jest and he and Sandra will give you space if you want it. If your wallet's on a tight leash, but you want comfort, this is the place to be.

Room Tip: Room three has in in suite bathroom and is sunny with windows on 2 walls.

The physical structure of the Chapman is is from 1865 and is beautiful and clean while featuring tons of character, plus it is situated right along the town commons and a very short walk from river trails, xc ski and hiking trails, biking routes, and lots of good food. We found that, in general, the town of Bethel holds onto it's New England nature: unassuming, welcoming, and generous in spirit (attributes also held by the inn's owners Fred and Sandra) while offering some truly excellent experiences. The owners gave us as many ideas and tips on local interests as we could ever need, while also maintaining an air of calm and humor that made us feel welcome and attended to without feeling like we were being a burden or, worse, pestered. On day one we held our breath at the beauty of the valley as seen from the cliffs of Mt. Will (a couple miles out of town and a hike recommended by Fred), then had our taste buds dance at the local Korean restaurant Cho Sun (found in the inn's "restaurants" binder), and then came home to find a fire quietly crackling in the hearth at the Chapman Inn. To top it off, Fred had put out hot water for us so we could make tea to close out the day. And in the morning he made fresh blueberry muffins (in addition to the fresh fruit, fresh-brewed coffee roasted especially for the Inn, eggs any way you want them, and, well, you get the idea)...
The point is, after staying the weekend with my wife I now want to bring back the whole family next year.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 3 (second floor, corner room). The Inn was quiet in general when we were there, b...

I'm not used to staying at 'inns' so I wasn't sure what to expect. This is an older inn so if you're looking for the bright and shiny Hampton Inn experience, it's not for you. It is however, a nicely restored inn, very clean, and very professionally run. We stayed in the suite which I thought was a good value, lots of room with a kitchenette. The owners are very helpful, the breakfasts are good with plenty of food served. The location is good for access to the White Mountains Forest. Bethel is a small, charming town, great for a walk after dinner.
I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: The suite would be great for a family.

My mother-in-law and I stayed in Room 2 for just a night on our trip through New England to view fall foliage, but were so impressed with the convenient location (just steps away from at least two great restaurants and lots of shops), delicious breakfast of wild mushroom omelette, blueberry pancakes and bacon, and custom- roasted coffee. Our room was very clean. Stay in the rooms in the main building if you can, that way you have easy access to the livingroom and diningroom. The BEST feature of the Chapman Inn is the friendly and accommodating folks who run it. They made certain we were happy and comfortable, which is worth so much when you are tired and stressed from a day of travel.

Reading the reviews on TripAdvisor and taking a look at the Chapman Inn website had me looking forward to a visit to a quaint country inn. What we got was a tired, rundown, second rate inn with leaning floors, peeling paint and wallpaper, ripped tub sheet, old and warn bedspreads, broken lampshade and a "fair" rather than good experience. On the plus side, the beds were comfortable enough for a good night's sleep and the towels and sheets were clean. They also served the best french toast I ever had. But $150 a night for this experience? We felt we would have been better off at a nearby roadside motel and a diner breakfast. Sandra and her friend Debbie were quite nice and treated us right. But...I'd either do a major overhaul of this place or pack it in. I found the place had a sad and tired appearance and had seen much better days. Go to the Bethel Inn where we enjoyed an excellent dinner instead.

We do value ALL of our guests' comments, and actually find the very few negative ones the most valuable. It is true that after a long summer and fall season, we do have some minor issues to deal with, and we make good use of our down times to address those issues. And it is true that in one or two of our rooms the floors do have a little "tilt" to them, but the inn is 150 years old, and she has settled into what is for her a very comfortable position. I do think, however, that we offer good value, comfortable surroundings, and a very sincere interest in our guest's comfort. My only request is that the guest make their feelings known at the time when something can be done about it. For us to read about it after the fact does not allow us to correct any problem in whatever way necessary. Folkwriter, Sandra and I are very sorry you didn't enjoy your stay, and if there is anything we can do in hindsight, just let us know.
Sincerely,
Fred & Sandra

I would like to recommend the Chapmann Inn B2B.

Located in a beautiful part of Bethel, the house itself has a history and a story behind it along with the surrounded neighborhood.

For a very affordable price you get a good room and the most generous breakfast you can think of.

For an extra 6$ I also got laundry service.

The couple who run this place create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

A definite recommendation in case you in Bethel area.

Nice place for a stop over. I have to mention the breakfast first, as it was first class. Amazing omelet, great food. Other people raved about the french toast which looked amazing. Room was nice, clean and comfortable. A bit of street noise, but we did go the weekend of their Jeep rally. The owner I think is a part time comic, jokester - kept us entertained for sure.

Room Tip: try to avoid a room right on Church street.
